Bitcoin faces pressure near $80,000 as ETF inflows and whale demand rise

Bitcoin traded higher on Wednesday, holding above $78,000, but struggled to extend its recovery and break through the $80,000 threshold despite improving institutional demand and increased holdings among large investors.
Inflows into spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds reached $314.37 million on Tuesday, marking a seventh consecutive session of positive flows, while the funds’ total net assets climbed to $99.05 billion, equivalent to 6.31% of Bitcoin’s market capitalization.
Bitcoin needs to break above $80,000 and then overcome resistance near $82,800 to confirm that the recovery remains intact.
Institutional and whale activity picks up
Eric Balchunas, senior ETF analyst at Bloomberg, said BlackRock had facilitated $5 billion worth of exchanges between its IBIT fund and Bitcoin held by investors, noting that lowering the maximum exchange threshold to $1 million helped make the mechanism accessible to more large investors.
These exchanges, which take place without directly selling the underlying asset, allow tax liabilities to be deferred until the ETF shares are eventually sold.
Meanwhile, Santiment data showed that the share of Bitcoin supply currently in profit rose to 69.32%, from 60.04% on August 13, after the cryptocurrency surged 23% in its strongest rally in three years.
The number of whale transactions worth more than $1 million also climbed to 12,778 over a seven-day period, pointing to renewed activity among large investors.
Holdings by wallets containing between 10,000 and 1 million Bitcoin increased to 15.01% of total supply, up from 14.75% on August 1, indicating continued accumulation.
An increase in whale holdings typically suggests the formation of a price bottom or the potential for the recovery to continue.
