BNB▲$572.56 Chain deployed the Pasteur hard fork on BNB Smart Chain mainnet at 02:30 UTC on 25 August, which included a set of updates to strengthen cross-chain verification, tighten up validator authorization, and increase the limit on block capacity.
After activation, the network continued to run on its existing 450 millisecond block interval, and no major issues were reported.
In conjunction with BEP-682, BEP-695 and BEP-675, the upgrade, which was part of the wider BEP-673 upgrade plan, was operating on BSC’s Chapel testnet since 21 July to allow decentralized application developers and infrastructure providers to test and adapt to the updates prior to mass deployment on the mainnet.
BEP-682 reduces an issue with light-block verification for cross-chain infrastructure, where the existence of duplicate validators in a given list is not rejected.
Giving such a request a chance to continue with the same validator creates the impression it is supported by more independent participants than it actually is.
In the current version of Pasteur, duplicates are dropped before checking the required supermajority, and BNB Chain reported that no exploitation or funds were lost.
BEP-695 also seeks to improve validator security by not allowing a validator’s operator keys to be transferred to a new key when rotating their operator key, and by not clearing pending penalties.
The upgrade also prevents restricted addresses from circumventing governance checks through offchain signatures made by other accounts, and updates governance contracts to check and verify the original signer before accepting votes.
BEP-675 proposes a method to increase efficiency in block production by allowing builders specializing in execution to pre-submit blocks. Validators will sign the proposed block after checking that it meets the consensus requirements, but before executing transactions, and broadcast it. By contrast, builders and validators on BSC would execute transactions then sign them, which wastes processing power due to a short block time.
While the mechanism does not change BSC’s 100 million block gas limit or its time interval of 450 milliseconds, it seeks to better utilize this capacity. During QANet testing, the transactions per second increased from 1,237 to 2,324. Gas usage per block went from 46.35 million to 84.15 million. These metrics are from controlled tests and do not represent mainnet performance.
This system isn’t mandatory, and the traditional method can still be used. BEP-675 has to be enabled through the network RPC interface, and its efficiency depends on the level of usage by the block builders and the network validators.
To participate in the fork, node operators needed to upgrade to version 1.7.7 and remove the deprecated EnableBAL configuration field, or else their nodes may fall out of sync with mainnet.
The ability for increased production and consistent block utilization, including transaction throughput, block utilization, missed-block rates, and validator performance metrics, will be tested under network-like conditions to determine the increase in capacity reported by the Pasteur lab gains. The upgrade itself was therefore largely focused on efficiency without changing BSC’s core timing or gas parameters.
