A new oppose Trump and his family profiting from cryptocurrency during his presidency as Washington debates the future of digital currencies
A national online poll of 1,166 U.S. adults between August 14 and 17, in response to the news, found that 63% of respondents said it was inappropriate for the Trump family to make the profit, while 32% said it was appropriate The poll has an error margin of about three percentage points
The poll also found that support for financial benefits from families’ cryptocurrency holdings differed substantially along partisan lines. Democrats were less likely, while Republicans were more likely, to support it. Nevertheless, 69% of Americans, including two-thirds of independents and nine out of ten Democrats, thought Trump’s business interests influenced his presidency.
The surveys are public opinion polls and not evidence of any wrongdoing or decisions made to benefit either. The White House has countered that Trump has no conflict of interest because he is acting in the public interest. Trump has said that his investments are independently managed and that he does not handle his family’s business affairs.
The situation was further compounded when Trump’s 2025 financial disclosure was made public in June and Reuters reported that he claimed more than $1.4 billion in income from crypto companies. This amount was based on reported income rather than the market value of his holdings or his own personal profit.
Most of the crypto-related revenue reported to date came through World Liberty Financial, in which Reuters estimated Trump-related companies earned close to $800 million, including more than $520 million from token sales.
Additionally, $635 million was disclosed as proceeds from licensing deals relative to the TRUMP memecoin. Given the large number of companies and business contracts involved, these initial figures do not reflect Trump’s actual earnings from the deals.
The fight comes as the administration seeks to clarify how the federal government will regulate cryptocurrency. Trump has urged Congress to pass the CLARITY Act, and other lawmakers have called for market-structure legislation that would prevent elected officials and their families from profiting off digital-asset businesses that they oversee.
World Liberty Financial received more news on Aug. 14 that the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency conditionally approved the company’s application to establish World Liberty Trust Company as a national trust bank, although the company does not yet have approval to open and operate the bank without satisfying other regulatory requirements.
So the US poll adds a public-opinion dimension to the already thorny intersection between crypto regulation, presidential ethics and private enterprise that will be scrutinized by future financial disclosures, congressional hearings and the oversight of World Liberty. The issue remains a focus as Congress returns to cryptocurrency policy.
