Ethereum price broke above $2,000 on Wednesday, reaching the level for the first time since June 2 as the broader crypto market accelerated higher.
ETH climbed to an intraday high near $2,103 after starting the session around $1,905. The move followed Bitcoin’s rally toward $70,000 and came as expectations for improved US market liquidity increased after the US Treasury doubled long-term bond buybacks, while a wave of short liquidations further boosted risk appetite.
Ethereum’s breakout is also supported by rising institutional demand, with spot Ethereum ETFs recording significant inflows. However, technical indicators now show that ETH is heavily overbought, leaving the cryptocurrency vulnerable to a short-term pullback.
Ethereum Reclaims $2,000 After Two Months
Ethereum gained roughly 8% over 24 hours, reaching around $2,080 after breaking through the $2,000 psychological resistance.
The move extends ETH’s recovery during the third quarter. Ethereum has gained approximately 31.1% in Q3, reversing its 25.3% decline during Q2.
The move above $2,000 is particularly important because Ethereum had spent much of the summer below that level. Holding above it could give bulls a stronger foundation for another leg higher.
Bitcoin Rally and Short Liquidations Fuel Crypto Market
Ethereum’s breakout did not happen in isolation. The broader market rally was driven by a combination of improving liquidity conditions, Treasury bond buybacks, ETF inflows and a major wave of short liquidations, as explained in our Why Are Crypto Prices Surging Today? analysis.
Bitcoin surged above $68,000 before reaching approximately $69,700, its highest level in more than two months. BTC gained around $4,400 in just 50 minutes as traders rushed to close bearish positions.
The resulting short squeeze significantly amplified the broader market rally.
According to CoinGlass data cited in theere liquidated within an hour, including around $2.21 million in short positions

Over a 24-hour period, total liquidations reached roughly $2.99 billion, with short positions accounting for approximately $2.74 billion. Around 1,72,041 traders were liquidated.
The largest individual liquidation involved a roughly $48.80 million BTCUSD value position on Hyperliquid.
Other major cryptocurrencies, including Solana, BNB, Dogecoin and Cardano, also advanced as market sentiment improved.
Ethereum Open Interest Jumps as Traders Position for More Gains
Ethereum’s derivatives market also became more active during the breakout.
ETH open interest increased by almost 10% in less than 24 hours, indicating that leveraged traders were adding positions as the price moved higher.
Rising open interest can support a rally when accompanied by sustained demand, but it also increases liquidation risk if prices reverse sharply.
That makes the $2,000 level particularly important. If ETH can establish the former resistance as support, the recent breakout could develop into a broader recovery. A failure to hold it, however, could quickly bring leveraged positions under pressure.
Ethereum ETFs Add Institutional Support
Spot Ethereum ETFs are providing another
The products recorded approximately $71.47 million in daily net inflows, while total assets reached around $10.83 billion, according to the data provided.
The continued ETF demand gives Ethereum’s rally a stronger fundamental backdrop than a purely derivatives-driven move.
If institutional inflows remain positive, they could help absorb selling pressure during any short-term correction and provide additional fuel for a move toward higher resistance levels.
Ethereum Price Analysis: Can ETH Hold Above $2,000?
Ethereum’s technical setup has improved significantly after the latest breakout.
ETH moved through $1,960, $2,000 and $2,050 in a single strong move before encountering resistance around the $2,100 area.
However, the rally has pushed momentum indicators deep into overbought territory.
The Relative Strength Index (RSI) stands at 87.41, indicating extremely strong momentum but also highlighting the possibility of a near-term correction.

At the same time, the Chaikin Money Flow (CMF) is 0.62, pointing to strong capital inflows and continued buying pressure behind the breakout.
The combination suggests that bulls remain in control, although the market may need to consolidate before attempting another major move higher.
Ethereum Price Targets: $2,120, $2,160 and $2,200
The immediate level to watch is $2,100.
A sustained four-hour close above this resistance could open the way toward $2,120, followed by $2,160.
If ETH successfully breaks above $2,160 with strong volume and momentum, the next major psychological target would be $2,200.
However, a rejection around $2,100 could trigger a pullback.
The first support would be around $2,050, followed by the important $2,000 level. A deeper correction could bring ETH back toward $1,960, which previously acted as resistance.
Will the Ethereum Rally Continue?
Ethereum’s move above $2,000 marks a major change from the previous day’s market conditions. In our Crypto Market Update for August 19, ETH was still testing resistance near $1,918 before the latest liquidity-driven rally pushed the asset through $2,000.
The next phase will now depend on whether bulls can turn the psychological $2,000 level into support.
Strong ETF inflows, rising capital flows and improving broader market sentiment are supporting the bullish case. At the same time, extremely elevated RSI readings and rising leverage create conditions where a short-term pullback would not be surprising.
For now, $2,100 is the key resistance and $2,000 is the critical support.
A sustained break above $2,100 could put $2,120, $2,160 and eventually $2,200 in focus. Conversely, losing $2,000 would weaken the breakout and could send Ethereum back toward $1,960.
The next few trading sessions should therefore determine whether Ethereum’s move above $2,000 becomes the foundation for a larger recovery or another temporary breakout.
