500-Million New Reality for Bitcoin: Ownership Hits 4.5%-6% of Global Population
The global cryptocurrency market has recorded a new reality — the number of holders of the world’s first cryptocurrency has officially exceeded half a billion people. According to an updated report by on-chain analyst Willy Woo, Bitcoin ($BTC) owners now account for 4.5% to 6% of the world’s total population.
According to the expert’s estimates, supported by Glassnode and Chainalysis metrics, the asset’s total audience ranges between 370 million and 500 million people. The current pace of coin distribution follows an S-shaped innovation adoption curve typical of the early stages of the internet’s development.
However, analysts disagree on whether this growth will translate into a multiple increase in the asset’s value in the coming years.
The presented statistics demonstrate an uneven distribution of global digital capital between developed and developing economies:
- India leads in the absolute number of users with 68 million people (4.6% of the country’s population).
- The United States ranks second with 50 million people, while maintaining the highest penetration rate among the world’s largest economies (14% of the population).
- China remains in third place with 33 million users (2.3% of the population), despite regulatory restrictions.
- Vietnam (17%) and the Philippines (14%) have recorded the highest levels of cryptocurrency penetration relative to their populations.

High $BTC adoption rates have also been recorded in countries with unstable macroeconomic conditions — Argentina (15%) and Turkey (14%). In these regions, the retail sector uses digital assets as a tool for hedging against local inflation risks and bypassing currency controls.
What is wrong with “$250,000 Bitcoin” forecasts
The new demographic data coincided with renewed discussion of $BTC’s price potential. Contrary to retail investors’ expectations of seeing Bitcoin at $250,000, the diminishing returns hypothesis currently dominates the market.
Historically, Bitcoin’s growth multiple has declined with each macro cycle: after 48x and 16x rallies, the current cycle is showing upside of around 1.8x, limiting the likely peak to approximately $123,000.
Willy Woo urges investors to ignore forecasts of exact market tops, as peaks are formed by short-term retail FOMO and lack fundamental support. According to his assessment, a reliable investment signal is generated only at the bottom, when large players identify the asset as undervalued.
In the long term, $BTC supporters contrast it with the fiat system, pointing to gold’s $32 trillion market capitalization.
The experiment with unbacked paper money has lasted only 55 years, while precious metals have served as money for thousands of years. If gold is gradually replaced by its digital equivalent, the mathematical model points to a long-term $BTC value of around $5 million per coin in today’s purchasing-power terms.
However, the traditional financial sector and regulators remain skeptical of such forecasts. Opponents point to the crypto market‘s high volatility, the difficulty of accurately counting unique users, and pressure from central banks.
The current 5% adoption rate is viewed as a point of institutional maturity, but real competition with fiat will not begin until global ownership reaches at least 50%.
