One of the most popular websites that track prices of cryptocurrencies, CoinMarketCap, has eliminated a shady popup on its site that asked users to verify their wallets.
On Friday, the platform confirmed the incident on its official X account, saying, “We have removed the malicious code on our site.” The warning seemed to be a phishing attack, which was intended to make the users connect their wallets and authorize the use of ERC-20 tokens.
Some crypto users on X cautioned that the popup attempted to steal personal information and private keys. One user, Auri wrote, it requests to connect the wallet and requests approvals.
In its initial response to the problem on X, CoinMarketCap stated, “We know that a malicious popup asking users to verify wallet has been present on our site.” The update was made within three hours of the reports in the community and CoinMarketCap was fast in action.
Although the malicious code has been removed, the platform added that it is continuing with its investigation. It added that its team is still investigating and is making efforts to bolster its security.
MetaMask and Phantom crypto wallets acted fast, raising the alert and preventing users to fall into the trap. Another user, Jet, said that both wallets had raised the red flag on the threat early.
CoinMarketCap also advised its users not to connect their wallets to any popup and promised to work on the safety of the site.
This case serves as a lesson to every crypto user be alert, do not trust any unknown popups, and make sure you check links on official sources before using your wallets.
