Ethereum has shed more than a fifth of its value since January, and the road back to breakeven is steeper than most holders realize, blocked by ETF outflows, a fading corporate buyer, and a string of technical resistance levels standing…

On January 1, 2026, an investment of $10,000 inEthereum(CRYPTO:ETH) bought approximately 3.367 ETH, based on CoinGecko’s price of $2,970 at that time. ETH trades around $2,337, so that same investment is worth about $7,869 today, a loss of 21.3%.

Ethereum’s value has been under pressure lately. In just the past month, the price dipped by 12.8%, and it fell 5.2% in the past week. Over the last 24 hours, ETH has traded between $2,314 and $2,380. Although a previous article noted an earlier price of around $3,124 at the start of the year, CoinGecko’s January figure is slightly lower, suggesting breaking even may not be as far off as some investors believe.

To break even, Ethereum needs to climb back to its January price of $2,970, a 27.1% gain from its current value. The question is what would need to happen for ETH to reach that level by the end of 2026.

What Ethereum Would Be Worth Back at $2,970

If ETH reaches $2,970, its market cap would be approximately $362.85 billion, based on a circulating supply of 122.17 million ETH. Its market cap is currently at $285.49 billion. For context,Bitcoin(CRYPTO:BTC), the leading cryptocurrency, has a market cap of $1.62 trillion.

Ethereum’s maximum supply is technically unlimited because the network issues new ETH as rewards to validators, the computers that process transactions. This means that as demand increases, buyers must contribute more total money to push prices higher.

The $2,970 breakeven point is well belowEthereum’s all-time high of $4,946, reached on August 24, 2025. With ETH trading at $3,980 a year ago on October 28, 2025, the $2,970 target marks a recovery to a level still below recent highs, not a new record.

Before ETH can reach $2,970, it has to overcome several resistance levels. The first resistance is at $2,361, followed by the 20-day average at $2,423, and then the 50-day average at $2,536. To hit the breakeven target, ETH needs to move 22.6% above the current 20-day average and 17.1% above the 50-day average. Meanwhile, support levels are at $2,290 and $2,276.

    ETF Outflows and Corporate Buying

Recently, spot Ether ETFs, funds that hold ETH and trade like stocks, saw significant outflows. On October 27, these ETFs lost $60.2 million, after an $88.58 million outflow the previous day. The most challenging day in the past month was October 6, when $201.89 million left the market.

Cumulative net inflow, the total deposits minus withdrawals since launch, dropped from $13.96 billion on September 28 to $12.57 billion on October 27. The highest single-day inflow during that period was $24.84 million on October 13. For ETH to recover by 27%, it likely needs weeks of inflows that far exceed that figure.

BitMine (AMEX:BMNR | BMNR Price Prediction) holds 6,051,933 ETH, 4.95% of the total supply, just under its 5% target. Public companies hold 8,127,138 ETH, valued at $19.01 billion. BitMine stakes a large portion of its ETH to help secure the network in exchange for rewards; staked coins can’t be sold. Once BitMine reaches its 5% target, it could slow its buying, and ETH would lose its single biggest corporate buyer.

Could a Bitcoin Recovery Boost ETH?

Bitcoin trades near $80,647, which is 36.0% belowits record high of $126,080. Over the past year, Bitcoin fell 29.5%, while Ethereum dropped 43.3%; ETH tends to decline more sharply in selloffs than Bitcoin.

However, if Bitcoin rebounds first, it could lift ETH with it. A Bitcoin recovery would help clear one obstacle to ETH’s bounce, compounded by ETF outflows and a slowdown in corporate buying.

Will Ethereum Reach $2,970 by the End of 2026?

The chances of ETH hitting $2,970 by December 31, 2026, seem low. Many factors must align, and the current ETF trends suggest otherwise. The most realistic path could involve ETH holding above $2,276, recovering to the 20-day average of $2,423, and finally breaking above the 50-day average of $2,536. Positive ETF flows and a simultaneous Bitcoin rebound would be crucial for this recovery plan.

For those holding 3.367 ETH, there’s reason to stay hopeful. Ethereum rose 22.3% in the 90 days following July 30, 2026, from $1,917, a rally close to the size needed. If ETH closes above $2,536 and ETF inflows exceed the $13.96 billion high from September 28, breakeven could be attainable; if it falls below $2,276 with outflows continuing, the 21.3% loss may widen, and breakeven could slide into 2027.
