South Korea’s ruling Democratic Party plans to discuss a further delay to taxation on virtual assets, which is scheduled to take effect in January next year, saying it will closely review tax fairness, predictability and actual implementation conditions, Newsis reported.
Floor leader Han Byung-do said at a National Assembly strategy meeting for the parliamentary audit today that concerns have been raised over whether authorities have secured enough trading data from overseas exchanges to enforce taxation on virtual asset income from January and whether the burden could fall disproportionately on users of South Korean exchanges. Han said the Democratic Party is well aware of those concerns and a range of opinions.
Han added that the party has listened closely to public opinion and plans to hold a general meeting of lawmakers today to gather final internal views before delivering the results to the government. The party will discuss necessary supplementary measures, including a possible delay to the implementation timeline, and will also accelerate legislation of a digital asset framework act to clarify the legal status of virtual assets and establish the backbone of industry regulation for fair taxation.
