Bitcoin Is Down 3% in October and Ethereum 12%. Which Should a First-Time Buyer Pick?

Bitcoin and Ethereum are both sliding in October, but one is falling four times harder than the other, and that gap changes everything a first-time buyer needs to weigh before spending a single dollar.

For a first-time buyer entering the world of cryptocurrency, choosing between Bitcoin and Ethereum can feel overwhelming, especially when both are trending down. As of October 2026,Bitcoin(CRYPTO: BTC) is down 3%, while Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH) is down 12%. So one asset may look safer, while the other may look like a bargain.

New buyers often grapple with this exact dilemma. A popular Reddit thread titled “ELI5: Why invest in Bitcoin when Ethereum exists?” highlights this confusion since Bitcoin is the original cryptocurrency, yet Ethereum offers more functionality. So, which should a first-time buyer choose?

    Item Detail
Buyer First-time buyer with a budget of $1,000
Bitcoin Trading at around $80,268, approximately 36% below itsall-time high of $126,080
Ethereum Trading at about $2,333, roughly 53% below its peak value

Ethereum Swings Harder Than Bitcoin in Both Directions

The volatility of these assets plays a crucial role in decision-making. First-time buyers need to consider how much paper loss they can tolerate. Over the past year, Bitcoin has fallen 28%, while Ethereum has fallen 40%. A buyer who panics during a market dip risks turning a temporary setback into a permanent loss.

In daily price movements, Bitcoin typically swings around 3%, while Ethereum moves about 4%. This means a $1,000 investment could move about $28 per day for Bitcoin and about $39 for Ethereum.

During downturns, volatility differences become even more pronounced. For example, in early 2026, Bitcoin fell 29%, reducing $1,000 to about $712, while Ethereum fell 38%, shrinking that same investment to about $617. This trend can help a nervous beginner decide which coin to sell during tough times.

Additionally, while Bitcoin has risen about 34% over the past five years, Ethereum has fallen 43%. However, over a longer timeframe, Ethereum boasts an astounding gain of about 20,390% over ten years, compared to Bitcoin’s 11,644%. This means Ethereum can deliver bigger booms, but also steeper busts.

A First $1,000 Can Go All Bitcoin, All Ethereum or Both

A first-time buyer essentially has three choices: invest entirely in Bitcoin, put everything in Ethereum, or mix both.

The first option is all Bitcoin. Many buyers choose Bitcoin, seen as scarce digital money with a capped supply of 21 million coins—over 20.1 million of which are currently in circulation. Bitcoin’s market value is around $1.6 trillion, vastly exceeding Ethereum’s $285 billion.

Additionally, buyers can access Bitcoin through regulatedspot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs)that hold about $105 billion, making it a steadier option for those seeking stability.

The second option is all Ethereum. Some choose Ethereum, a blockchain platform that supports various applications, stablecoins, and tokenized funds, capabilities Bitcoin lacks. Ethereum holders can also stake their coins to help secure the network and earn rewards.

However, Ethereum has no fixed supply cap, and its ETFs have seenconsiderable outflows, holding about $15 billion as of now. This choice might appeal to buyers who can handle the higher volatility.

The third option is a balanced approach. An increasingly popular option is to invest in both, with a heavier weighting on Bitcoin. This approach lets buyers benefit from Bitcoin’s smaller swings while still gaining some exposure to Ethereum’s potential growth, reducing the pressure to choose a single winner.

Ethereum’s Lower Price Per Coin Doesn’t Make It Cheaper

Some buyers might be tempted to choose Ethereum simply because it appears cheaper at $2,333 compared to Bitcoin’s $80,268. However, remember that you can buy both cryptocurrencies in fractions, so the price per coin doesn’t determine their value. Moreover,Ethereum’s larger October drop doesn’t guarantee a stronger rebound.

Also consider purchase costs, as trading fees and ETF expense ratios can vary significantly. Every dollar lost upfront in fees means it takes longer to recover on a $1,000 investment.

Should a First-Time Buyer Pick Bitcoin or Ethereum?

For most first-time buyers, Bitcoin is often a more prudent starting choice, with Ethereum as a smaller, optional addition. The main consideration should be investment size: cryptocurrencies should generally represent only a small part of an individual’s savings, with emergency funds set aside first.

The trade-off with starting with Bitcoin is potentially missing out on Ethereum’s upside if its applications gain traction—a possibility suggested by its 10-year performance record. If Ethereum stabilizes and its applications keep growing, adding it later could be advantageous. Until then, Bitcoin tends to offer a smoother path for newcomers.
