On October 19, 2026, five German savings banks flipped the switch: Sparkassen crypto trading went live inside their existing banking apps. DekaBank, the Sparkassen group’s own securities house, runs the service. Customers at those institutions can buy and sell Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP▼$1.29, Solana and Polygon without ever opening an account at a crypto exchange.

Five is a sliver of the network. More than 230 savings banks have signaled interest in joining No nationwide switch-on date exists. Each regional savings bank picks its own moment
Sparkassen Crypto Trading: Five Banks Live, 230-Plus in the Queue
That gap — five live, more than 230 waiting — is the whole story of the rollout. NewsBTC puts the expected connection pace at 30 to 40 institutions a month. The group’s association told German news agency dpa that a substantial share of the interested banks should be live during the first half of 2027.
Everything hinges on whether a customer’s own regional bank has opted in. A depositor in one town may see the trading tab this month; a neighbor in the next district waits.
DekaBank provides the service, and Börse Stuttgart is involved in the custody arrangements, per NewsBTC.
Five Coins, Self-Directed and Advice-Free
Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Solana and Polygon make up the opening lineup. The product is built for people who want to make their own calls: no advice is given inside the Sparkasse branch or app, BeInCrypto reports.
DekaBank quotes a binding price for each trade and holds it for a limited time. Fixed exchange hours do not apply, though maintenance windows and market disruptions can cut access. Customer service runs Monday to Thursday from 8:00 to 18:00 and Friday until 17:00.
€0.99 a Trade, Plus a Spread
The reported charge is €0.99 per trade plus a spread The reporting does not put a number on the spread
Custody is centralized. DekaBank holds the assets for customers, with private keys kept in trust in a jointly managed omnibus wallet. Withdrawals go only to approved crypto-asset providers — so this is not a route to moving coins into a personal wallet.
In practice, the customer holds a claim on an institution rather than direct control of keys. That is a different proposition from a self-custody wallet.
No Deposit Insurance Behind the Crypto
Statutory deposit insurance does not cover crypto holdings in the app, BeInCrypto notes. DekaBank also warns that trades may be delayed or unavailable at the time or price a customer wants.
Sparkassen itself continues to call cryptocurrencies highly speculative, flagging sharp volatility and the possibility of a total loss. Traditional savings products remain its preferred route for long-term wealth building.
What to Watch as the Rollout Widens
Track participating banks, not registered customers. At 30 to 40 additions a month, the 230-plus interested institutions represent roughly six to eight months of onboarding if the pace holds — which lines up with the first-half-2027 target the association gave dpa.
Bitcoin traded near $81,000 on October 20, down about 1.6% over 24 hours, per CoinGecko. What the rollout really does is put a mainstream German banking channel in front of retail buyers who have never used an exchange — a demand shift away from specialist platforms rather than a price catalyst on its own.
When are more interested savings banks expected to be connected?
NewsBTC reports that 30 to 40 institutions are expected to join each month, and the Sparkassen association told dpa that a substantial number of the more than 230 interested banks should be connected during the first half of 2027. Each regional bank opts in on its own timetable.
Which cryptocurrencies are included in the initial offering?
The starting lineup is Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Solana and Polygon. Customers buy and sell all five inside the existing Sparkassen app, not through a separate exchange account.
What does DekaBank charge for each trade?
The reported charge is €0.99 per trade plus a spread The spread is built into the price DekaBank quotes for each order rather than billed separately, and its size is not disclosed in the reporting
Can customers withdraw crypto to a personal wallet?
No. Withdrawals are limited to approved crypto-asset providers, and the assets sit in a jointly managed omnibus wallet where DekaBank holds the private keys in trust.
Is trading available outside normal exchange hours?
Yes, trading is not tied to fixed exchange hours, so orders can be placed whenever the system is available. Maintenance windows and market disruptions can still restrict access, and DekaBank warns trades may be delayed or go through at a different price than requested.
