As South Korea prepares to begin taxing digital assets next year, claims are spreading among investors that using offshore perpetual futures instead of spot trading could reduce tax burdens, The Herald Business reported.
According to industry sources on Oct. 16, investor communities have recently been sharing a “1x long strategy on offshore exchange futures.” The approach involves taking a long position in perpetual futures on offshore exchanges such as Binance and Bybit, with leverage set at 1x, instead of buying Bitcoin spot on South Korean exchanges. Under the current income tax law, taxable income next year covers gains from buying and selling digital asset spot holdings or lending them out. Because the law uses an enumerated approach, profits from offshore perpetual futures are not explicitly listed as taxable, creating what the report described as a tax-saving gap. An industry official said the sharing of avoidance methods even before the tax takes effect is itself a sign of trading volume shifting away, and added that once taxation begins, the flow of users to offshore exchanges could accelerate.
