Speaking at this year’s TOKEN2049 event in Singapore, Polymarket CEO Shayne Coplan dropped a bombshell on crypto investors in the audience: He suggested that they could achieve superior returns by investing in prediction market event contracts rather than in the spot crypto market.
Admittedly, as investment advice, that might sound incredibly misguided. But anyone who has traded crypto over the past few years knows the reality. Coplan is right, and here’s why.
Missed AI’s “Act 1”? Act 2 Could Be 14x Bigger. Most investors think they missed the AI boat because they didn’t buy Nvidia in 2005. But according to our analysts, we’re only at the end of “Act 1″—the R&D phase. “Act 2” is the global rollout.Continue »
Irrational exuberance and hot potato
According to Coplan, the crypto market has turned into a game of “irrational exuberance” and “hot potato.” Crypto investors rush into the market, eagerly searching for the next big altcoin capable of delivering 100x returns. They pour their money into that crypto and hope it will soar in value.
If it does, they immediately try to sell it to anyone who might buy it. The key is to get out of the market before the altcoin crashes.
If that sounds familiar, it’s because it is. It’s how meme coins work. Nobody really believes in the fundamentals or growth story of a particular meme coin. It’s really just a game of “hot potato,” as you try to find the next buyer for your speculative investment.
Unfortunately, investing in the next big altcoin — whether it’s Hyperliquid, Zcash, or Venice Token — increasingly feels like the same game. Everyone suspects that, as soon as these hard-charging altcoins soar in value, they’re likely to come crashing back down to earth.
With a few notable exceptions — such as Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) and Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH) — it’s remarkably difficult to find any cryptocurrencies worthy of inclusion in a long-term, buy-and-hold portfolio. The crypto market is just too volatile and speculative.
In search of more predictable returns
In contrast, the prediction market offers the potential for more “predictable” returns, says Coplan. Instead of buying an altcoin and hoping for it to generate 100x returns, it’s possible to make much more reasonable predictions about where a particular cryptocurrency might be going over a shorter period of time.
You can predict a 20% rise in the price of a crypto on Polymarket and make a significant amount of money, as long as you are early. For example, let’s say that you started accumulating prediction market contracts on Bitcoin this summer, back when it was trading for $60,000. Those contracts would be profitable now, with Bitcoin trading near $85,000.
