As innovative as the automotive industry is, the rapid pace of its growth has caused components like supply chain management to fall behind, necessitating new solutions.

The automotive industry is necessarily an innovative one, as consumers and governments alike demand noticeable progress from car manufacturers year after year. Some parts of the industry have adapted to this demand faster than others, however, creating a lag in important areas like supply chain management. To keep pace, some manufacturers have started experimenting with blockchain-based technology, looking beyond basic financial factors like <a href="https://www.binance.com/en/price/bitcoin/USD” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>Bitcoin to USD and instead focusing on the underlying tech’s ability to facilitate transactions like payments.

    Stagnation in a Delicate System

The primary reason the automotive industry in particular would benefit from greater efficiency is simple: with so many moving parts involved, one delay or miscommunication can have significant consequences. While avoiding these issues might not be too challenging under normal conditions, the automotive industry regularly faces demands from both consumers and regulatory bodies wanting products that work better while minimizing issues like pollution.

Meeting such demands under this kind of pressure is, in a word, difficult. Processes like manufacturing and engineering have accelerated in response, but more logistics-heavy elements, such as supply chain management and payments, have had a harder time keeping up, creating more opportunities for errors and disruptions.

For example, until recently, most manufacturers had to rely on databases and paper trails to keep track of their supply chains. This methodology was both time-consuming and opaque, making it hard to share information with regulators or consumers in a timely fashion. Given that compliance standards alone may require some major manufacturers to track millions of documents for current and future regulations, it becomes apparent why managing logistics in the automotive industry is tedious at best.

Uses for Blockchain-Based Tech: Supply Chains

When thinking about the word “blockchain,” many people’s minds go immediately to cryptocurrencies or more obscure concepts like Web3. While it is true that blockchain supports these technologies, it has applications well beyond making investments or trades.

Recall that blockchains are effectively ledgers distributed across a series of decentralized “nodes.” According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology, distributed-ledger and blockchain-related technologies can support manufacturing supply-chain traceability by facilitating the exchange of traceability records. Their structure allows them to store and transmit information in a way that makes such data both transparent and secure. While this makes blockchains useful for sensitive financial transactions, it also makes them a practical tool for other kinds of information.

As an example, IBM describes a 2018 case study wherein a car manufacturer incorporated blockchain technology in its supply chain management systems to improve its overall efficiency, outlining these benefits: “The distributed ledger technology makes it possible to share and track information across various users. Permissions control access and visibility, so each party maintains confidentiality of its data. And users and transactions are verified and preserved by the blockchain. This creates a network of trust between participants, even if they don’t know one another.”

In an industry that regularly handles hundreds of thousands of documents or more, being able to transmit information quickly while still maintaining control over its storage and visibility is nothing less than valuable.

    Uses for Blockchain-Based Tech: Payments

Of course, not all car manufacturers are so large that their primary concern is handling compliance documents. Smaller automakers in cities like Detroit, for instance, may instead worry more about payments, as delayed supplier payments can affect production planning, cash flow, and even inventory for businesses that lack the scale to absorb the consequences of such delays. Fortunately, blockchains may be able to help in this regard as well.

In B2B transfers, delays often stem from transfer systems themselves, not necessarily the businesses sending money. This is usually because traditional money transfers have to go through centralized financial entities like banks, which can take up to several days to process such transfers before the end recipient gets the payment.

Blockchain-based payment systems may allow automakers to circumvent this kind of processing. Since transfers made using blockchains generally only take a few minutes at most to complete, it stands to reason that payments made through the same technology are able to do the same. Importantly, businesses usually do not have to hold crypto themselves for this to work, as many blockchain-based payment processors convert fiat to crypto and back again automatically.

    Notable Risks When Using Blockchain

Blockchain technology has its uses, but not without some accompanying risks and considerations. Most importantly, although many blockchain providers are working toward making the technology more accessible, it still imposes a learning curve that smaller businesses may not have the time or recurity, compliance, and even taxes into consideration

Additionally, because blockchains are wholly digital, they can be vulnerable to hacking or other cyberattacks from bad actors. As such, users need to be aware of how to handle security. The same may go for audits, banking relationships, and legal review. Even businesses using blockchains for functions like supply chain management may still need to look into best practices concerning data privacy and security.

    Striving for Efficiency

Innovating in any industry is challenging, especially when that industry faces considerable pressure from consumers and regulators alike. The automotive industry has done well in this regard when it comes to expanding operations, but that expansion has complicated many logistical matters, necessitating innovation in a way the industry may not have seen for some time.

Although blockchain-based technology is by no means perfect, it offers several notable benefits in regard to speed, transparency, and security in the context of sending and receiving data. Both large and small automakers may be able to take advantage of this technology and the efficiency it offers, but only after taking issues like cybersecurity and compliance into account.
