As of September 28, 2026, Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) commands 58.3% of the total value in the cryptocurrency market. Investors holding altcoins are eager to see this figure decline. Bitcoin dominance refers to this percentage, and a significant drop typically signals the start of an altcoin season, a period when many altcoins outperform Bitcoin at the same time.
However, some altcoins are not waiting for this shift. For instance, Zcash (CRYPTO: ZEC) surged approximately 295% over the past three months, while Bitcoin, priced around $83,539, rose about 44%. So, is altcoin season approaching in 2026, or has capital already shifted towards a select few cryptocurrencies?
Bitcoin Dominance at 58.3% Can Fall for the Wrong Reason
Bitcoin dominance is calculated by dividing Bitcoin’s market value—its price multiplied by the total number of coins in circulation—by the market value of all cryptocurrencies combined. As of September 28, the total market value stood at about $2.88 trillion. Comparatively, other major players in the space include Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH) at roughly 11.4%, XRP (CRYPTO: XRP) at 3.3%, Solana (CRYPTO: SOL) at 2.4%, and Zcash at 0.9%.
Bitcoin’s dominance can decline for two different reasons. First, it can drop if altcoins rise faster than Bitcoin, which is what investors hope for. Second, it can fall if Bitcoin’s price drops faster than most other cryptocurrencies, which would spell trouble for altcoins as well.
