Robinhood News: DOJ Charges Engineers Over Hyperliquid Trades

The DOJ charged two former Robinhood engineers with commodities fraud and wire fraud after prosecutors say they traded Hyperliquid perpetual futures ahead of Robinhood Crypto token listing announcements, allegedly earning more than $50,000 each between 2025 and 2026. The counts carry potential sentences under the Commodity Exchange Act (up to 10 years) and wire fraud (up to 20 years), and the case raises regulatory and security scrutiny of crypto derivatives, token launch information and exchanges, increasing enforcement risk for CEXs, DEXs and DeFi markets.

    Key Insights

    • Robinhood news centers on federal fraud charges against two former engineers.
    • Prosecutors allege both traded Hyperliquid perpetuals before token listings.
    • Chai and Xiang each allegedly earned more than $50,000 from the trades.

Robinhood news turned to federal enforcement on Tuesday after prosecutors charged two former engineers with commodities fraud and wire fraud. Hefu Chai, 36, and Huaisong Xiang, 30, allegedly used confidential listing information to trade perpetual futures on Hyperliquid.

Prosecutors say both bought contracts before Robinhood Crypto announced support for specific tokens. Each allegedly made more than $50,000 between 2025 and 2026. The case places fresh focus on insider trading controls, Hyperliquid crypto markets, and sensitive token listing data. Robinhood said it investigated the matter and reported it to authorities.

Robinhood News Charges Focus on Confidential Listing Data

The Justice Department saysChai and Xiang had access to nonpublic information through their engineering roles at Robinhood. That information covered whether and when Robinhood Crypto planned to support additional cryptocurrencies. Prosecutors allege both men used those details before public listing announcements.

The pair allegedly bought perpetual futures tied to tokens scheduled for Robinhood listings. Prosecutors say the trades occurred while they possessed material nonpublic information. The DOJ also said Robinhood cooperated with the investigation.

Chai worked as an engineer at Robinhood from about 2021 until May 2026, according to the complaint. He also served as a technical lead involved with new digital asset listings. That role allegedly gave him regular access to confidential listing plans. The complaint says future listings had commercial value and could affect token prices after announcements.

This Robinhood news case centers on information prosecutors describe as commercially valuable and confidential. The complaints do not allege that Robinhood directed the trading.

Robinhood News Details Alleged Hyperliquid Trading Scheme

Hyperliquid offers perpetual futures that track underlying assets without requiring direct ownership. Unlike standard futures, these contracts do not expire. Traders can keep positions open while making or receiving funding payments.

Prosecutors allege Chai and Xiang used Hyperliquid crypto perpetuals to profit before Robinhood released listing news. The case differs from earlier crypto insider trading prosecutions involving direct token purchases. Here, authorities are using the Commodity Exchange Act alongside wire fraud charges.

Each defendant faces one count of violating the Commodity Exchange Act. That charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. Each also faces one wire fraud count, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years.

Any sentence would be decided by a judge after conviction. The complaints are accusations, and both men are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

Robinhood said it has zero tolerance for insider trading and maintains policies covering new crypto listings. The company said it immediately investigated the matter and reported it to law enforcement and regulators. It also said it will continue cooperating with the investigations.

Hyperliquid Case Adds Scrutiny Around Crypto Derivatives

The Robinhood news follows an earlier federal case involving confidential token listing information at Coinbase. That case centered on advance knowledge of listings and trading in the underlying crypto assets. The current matter instead targets alleged trading through perpetual futures.

The distinction matters for the Hyperliquid crypto market and other derivatives venues. Prosecutors say misuse of confidential information can trigger commodities and fraud charges. The DOJ specifically referenced perpetual futures and similar financial instruments.

The case arrives while Robinhood shares trade under broader pressure across crypto-linked equities. The HOOD stock price fell on Tuesday alongside several digital asset companies as Bitcoin weakened.

Prosecutors have not accused Robinhood itself of wrongdoing in the alleged scheme. The company is identified as the employer whose confidential information was allegedly misused. The Robinhood news filing focuses on individual conduct rather than corporate charges against the brokerage.
