Deutsche Bank expects to receive a crypto custody license under the EU’s MiCA framework in October, positioning the German lender to onboard its first institutional and corporate clients before year-end. The initial offering covers Bitcoin, Ether, and stablecoins including USDC, EURC, and EURAU, with tokenized financial instruments planned for a later phase. The platform uses institutional-grade security controls and builds on the bank’s 2023 partnership with Taurus. Deutsche Bank’s move comes as German peers including DZ Bank and Landesbank Baden-Württemberg have already entered the custody space, and as MiCA’s full enforcement accelerates approvals across European banks. As a Global Systemically Important Bank, Deutsche Bank’s licensing timeline carries industry-wide significance.

Deutsche Bank Eyes October MiCA License for Institutional Crypto Custody Launch

Deutsche Bank (DB) is positioning itself to become one of the first global systemically important banks to offer regulated digital asset custody across Europe, with a license under the bloc’s crypto framework expected as soon as October.

The German lender said Wednesday it is preparing to onboard its first institutional and corporate clients this year once the regulatory process concludes. The initial offering will cover custody for Bitcoin, Ether, and a curated set of stablecoins — Circle’s USDC and EURC, along with AllUnity’s EURAU. Tokenized financial instruments are slated for a later phase, signaling a roadmap that extends well beyond crypto-native assets.

Heinrich Frömsdorf, a Deutsche Bank spokesperson, told Cointelegraph that the bank anticipates receiving the custody license in October under the EU’s Markets in Crypto Assets regulation. The timing aligns with a broader acceleration of crypto service approvals among European banks following MiCA’s full enforcement on July 1.

The custody platform itself is built around institutional-grade controls. According to details shared by the bank, the infrastructure includes hardware-protected key generation, separate warm and cold storage environments, segregation of duties, multi-person transaction approvals, and controlled backup and recovery systems. Deutsche Bank will manage wallets and private keys on behalf of clients, which are expected to include corporations, asset managers, hedge funds, custodians, brokers, and sovereign institutions across its Corporate Bank and Investment Bank divisions.

Gerald Podobnik, co-head of the Corporate Bank, framed the move as an expansion of financial infrastructure rather than a pivot away from traditional markets. He said digital assets represent additional financial rails that can operate alongside existing market infrastructure, with the service expanding based on client demand, regulation, and internal product and risk approvals.

A Long Road to Regulatory Alignment

Deutsche Bank’s path to a MiCA-aligned custody product has been years in the making. The bank first revealed plans to launch crypto custody solutions in 2023, shortly after applying for a digital asset custody license in Germany. That initial announcement came as part of a partnership with Taurus, the Swiss digital asset infrastructure firm that remains a key technology provider for the platform.

The relationship with Taurus has since expanded. In 2025, Deutsche Bank targeted a 2026 rollout that would also involve Bitpanda Technology Solutions alongside Taurus. The bank and Bitpanda already had an existing banking relationship covering real-time payments and German IBAN infrastructure for Bitpanda customers.

Sabih Behzad, the bank’s head of digital assets, had signaled broader ambitions as early as June 2023, when he disclosed that Deutsche Bank was considering entering the stablecoin market — including the possibility of issuing its own token. That exploration fits a wider pattern among banks assessing how stablecoins and tokenized deposits could integrate with traditional finance.

The custody launch also follows several other blockchain initiatives inside the bank. Deutsche Bank completed its first euro-denominated cross-border payment through Partior’s blockchain network in September 2025 and has continued work on tokenized money, securities, and settlement infrastructure. It is also among 21 financial institutions developing a global bank-backed stablecoin initiative targeting a U.S. dollar product in 2027, with other G7 currency versions planned afterward.

Germany’s Banking Sector Moves in Parallel

Deutsche Bank is not the only German institution making headway in crypto custody, though its status as a Global Systemically Important Bank — as designated by the Financial Stability Board — gives its approvals and timelines outsized industry weight.

The competitive landscape among German banks has been taking shape for some time:

    Institution Milestone Timing
Landesbank Baden-Württemberg Began offering crypto custody after partnering with Bitpanda April 2024
DZ Bank Received BaFin authorization under MiCA for meinKrypto platform December 2025
Deutsche Bank Expects MiCA custody license; first clients onboarding October 2026

Note: Timeline reflects publicly announced milestones for German banks entering institutional crypto custody.

Beyond Germany, the European landscape is filling in as well. Italy’s Banca Sella completed the regulatory process needed to offer MiCA-cleared crypto custody earlier this year, covering both custody and transfers. Standard Chartered is separately moving to acquire Zodia Custody’s regulated custody business and integrate those operations more closely with its institutional banking platform.

Deutsche Bank said last week that almost 200 European crypto-asset service providers were already authorized to provide custody and administration services under the developing European framework. The MiCA regime created a common EU standard for crypto-asset services including custody, replacing much of the previous country-by-country licensing structure that had fragmented the market.

    What the October Timeline Means

For institutional investors, the significance of Deutsche Bank’s move lies less in the specific assets being custodied and more in the signal it sends about infrastructure maturity. A bank-scale custody product reduces friction for entities that need regulated settlement and controls, particularly when moving from pilots or indirect exposure to direct custody arrangements.

The bank’s stated October licensing expectation suggests it is aligning product readiness with the maturation of MiCA’s supervisory structure, rather than attempting to launch under earlier, less harmonized rules. Institutions of this scale typically face particularly heavy scrutiny, so their approvals are likely to carry industry weight beyond Germany’s borders.

The key variables to watch are whether the October licensing process stays on track, how quickly Deutsche Bank expands beyond the initial asset list after launch, and whether the later addition of tokenized financial instruments becomes a meaningful bridge between traditional securities workflows and on-chain custody. The bank has indicated that final launch timing, available markets, and supported assets remain tied to completion of the applicable regulatory process.
