Solana’s blockchain gaming story is getting more complicated. In March 2026, Solana Foundation President Lily Liu publicly argued that gaming on a blockchain was not coming back, even as Solana’s own developer rellet-based authentication, token payments, and on-chain economies

That tension may say more about the changing definition of crypto gaming than it does about whether the sector is simply alive or dead.

Semrush currently estimates roughly 4,400 monthly U.S. searches for “crypto gaming,” 590 for “Web3 gaming,” and 70 for “Solana gaming.” The broadest terms are competitive, but the demand shows that retail interest in the intersection of games and blockchain has not disappeared. What may be changing is where the blockchain actually sits in the experience.

Play-to-earn is no longer the whole crypto gaming thesis

The first major wave of blockchain gaming was easy to explain: play a game, earn a token, sell the token.

It was also easy to break.

If the game was built primarily around financial rewards, players could behave more like yield seekers than fans. When token prices weakened, or new users stopped arriving, the economic loop became difficult to sustain. The result was a long period in which “crypto game” became shorthand for a product where the token mattered more than the gameplay.

    That model deserves skepticism.

But rejecting reward-first games does not require rejecting every blockchain function around gaming.

Solana still offers useful gaming rails

Solana’s current developer material still describes a broad toolkit for game developers: wallet authentication, tokens for in-game purchases, digital collectibles, USDC micropayments, tournament rewards, interoperable assets, and SDKs for major development environments.

Its gaming and entertainment materials also present Solana as infrastructure for low-cost ownership and composable game economies. The network currently advertises more than 88 live games in its ecosystem.

Those capabilities can exist even if most successful games never become fully on-chain.

A mainstream game does not need every movement, inventory update, or combat event written to a blockchain. It may only need a few crypto rails where they create real value: ownership, settlement, authentication, rewards, or interoperability.

The Web3 opportunity may be moving around the game

The more durable opportunity could be outside the game client itself.

Games create audiences, creators, communities, tournaments, marketplaces, mods, sponsorships, and media. Those surrounding economies already move enormous amounts of attention and money without requiring the base game to become a blockchain application.

Crypto infrastructure can participate in that outer layer.

A creator can be paid through a token or stablecoin. A brand can fund a campaign around a gaming audience. A reputation system can record participation. A community can use a wallet for eligibility or rewards. Digital assets can move between compatible experiences without forcing the entire game to be financialized.

That approach makes crypto less visible to the player and potentially more useful to the businesses and creators around the player.

    Where Wanted Network fits

Wanted Network is an example of that external model.

The platform is being built on Solana around creator Missions, Bounties, Heat reputation, and WNTD-powered rewards. Its gaming thesis does not require a game publisher to put WNTD inside the game.

Instead, creators can produce content around gaming culture, complete campaign objectives, and build reputation through activity on Wanted Network. Advertisers can use the platform to coordinate creator campaigns, while WNTD operates inside Wanted Network’s own economy.

    That distinction is important.

A crypto project can benefit from the attention surrounding games without pretending that a publisher has integrated its token. It can build tools for creators, advertisers, and communities around the game while remaining independent from the game itself.

For a platform targeting audiences around major gaming releases, that may be a more defensible path than trying to convince players that every game needs an on-chain economy.

Crypto gaming may survive by becoming less obvious

The phrase “blockchain gaming” may ultimately shrink even if blockchain infrastructure around games continues to grow.

Players care about whether a game is fun, fast, and worth their time. Creators care about audience, distribution, and income. Brands care about reaching buyers. Developers care about infrastructure that works without creating friction.

If crypto can improve one of those things, it has a role. If it makes the experience worse simply to prove that a game is on-chain, it probably does not.

The debate around Solana gaming therefore may not be a choice between “blockchain games are the future” and “blockchain games are dead.” The more interesting middle ground is that Web3 becomes infrastructure surrounding games rather than the headline feature inside them.

For creator economies, that shift could be significant. Gaming already produces the culture. Crypto may be most useful when it helps the people around that culture get paid, prove participation, and coordinate economic activity without asking the game itself to become a financial product.
