The XRP Ledger (XRPL) has processed a record 3,254 transactions in a single block, setting a new record as XRP price climbed almost 4% amid developments surrounding the network.
Most transactions consisted of tiny XRP payments, which do not constitute a heavy load on the network, according to a report posted on X by XRPL validator Vet on <a href="https://xpertsstudio.com/xrp-price-tests-1-40-ahead-of-september-15-clarity-act-vote/” title=”XRP Price Tests $1.40 Ahead of September 15 CLARITY Act Vote”>September 14.
Although the sender’s identity and purpose remain unconfirmed, Vet suggested that the activity may have served as a throughput test.
“3254 transactions in a single block a few hours ago on the XRP Ledger. New record. Good opportunity to review an interesting characteristic of the XRP Ledger vs Bitcoin… I don’t know why this person is doing these transactions but looks like throughput testing probably,”Vet wrote.
What does the new XRP Ledger transaction record mean?
Notably, the reported record does not necessarily establish a new permanent transaction-processing limit for XRPL. Vet noted that unlike Bitcoin (BTC), which operates with a fixed block-size limit, the XRP Ledger uses an adaptive transaction target that can change depending on validator performance and ledger close times.
When a ledger contains more transactions than the current target and still closes within the expected timeframe, the network can increase its target. Conversely, slower ledger close times can lead to lower targets. Accordingly, a single ledger containing 3,254 transactions represents a high-volume processing event, not a guaranteed throughput rate.
“Many path cross currency, DEX and NFT transactions have higher load footprints. So for example 500 XRP payments constant load might not push the ledger into unhealthy territory but 200 DEX heavy transactions could. Basically not all transactions are equal in load footprint,”the validator added.
Furthermore, as mentioned, thousands of simple XRP payments can place a different computational burden on validators than a few transactions involving decentralized exchange (DEX) orders, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), or other complex payments. In other words, Vet’s figures do not necessarily measure how much computational work went into the block.
Overall, the 3,254-transaction ledger highlights, first and foremost, XRP Ledger’s ability to process a large burst of simple payments. But it does not by itself establish a permanent increase in network capacity.
