Bitcoin recovers but faces pressure from rising rate-hike bets

Bitcoin (BTC) prices recovered slightly, trading above $78,200 at the time of writing on Monday after falling more than 4% last week.
The price correction was driven by weaker institutional demand, with US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) recording more than $462 million in net outflows last week, ending a three-week inflow streak.
In addition, elevated expectations that the US Federal Reserve will raise interest rates, along with escalating tensions in the Middle East, continue to support the US dollar, potentially limiting the recovery of the world’s largest cryptocurrency.
Signs of weakening institutional demand for Bitcoin are emerging.
Data from SoSoValue showed that spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $462.73 million in net outflows last week, ending a three-week streak of inflows.
If these withdrawals persist and accelerate during the current week, Bitcoin could face further correction.
Rate-hike bets and geopolitical risks limit Bitcoin’s gains
Macroeconomic factors continue to weigh on Bitcoin.
Hotter US inflation data released last week increased expectations that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates.
According to the CME FedWatch Tool, traders are currently pricing in a probability of more than 86% that the US central bank will raise borrowing costs at the conclusion of its two-day meeting on Wednesday.
The elevated expectations follow last week’s US Producer Price Index (PPI) and Consumer Price Index (CPI) reports, which showed that inflationary pressures persisted at both the wholesale and consumer levels in August.
Continued geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East is also weighing on investors’ appetite for riskier assets.
In the latest developments, Iran-backed Houthi fighters in Yemen said they used drones and missiles to attack a military base in southern Saudi Arabia.
Meanwhile, a regional meeting scheduled for Monday between Gulf states and Iran to discuss the situation in the Strait of Hormuz was postponed, keeping the geopolitical risk premium elevated and supporting oil prices.
The US currency has benefited from these developments due to its safe-haven status, limiting Bitcoin’s upside potential.
These pressures come as markets await the Federal Reserve’s decision this week, with market pricing pointing to a high probability of an interest rate hike, a move that typically puts pressure on riskier assets such as Bitcoin.
