U.S. August CPI rose 3.4% year-over-year and 0.4% month-over-month, matching market expectations, but core CPI’s month-over-month increase of 0.3% came in 0.1 percentage point above forecasts. Grayscale’s head of research, Zach Pandl, said the inflation data raises the likelihood of a Fed rate hike and could serve as a short-term headwind for the crypto market. However, he expects any pullback to be limited and noted it could present a fresh buying opportunity for investors who missed August’s rally. The Fed’s FOMC meeting is scheduled for September 15–16, and a rate hike would likely escalate political tensions with President Donald Trump, who has publicly demanded rate cuts.

Grayscale Says U.S. August CPI Could Trigger Short-Term Crypto Correction

U.S. August Consumer Price Index (CPI) data came in line with market expectations, but Grayscale’s head of research cautioned that the inflation figures could act as a short-term correction trigger for the crypto market.

Zach Pandl, Grayscale’s head of research, wrote on X (formerly Twitter) on the 11th (local time) that “the some<a href="https://xpertsstudio.com/what-stakers-check-on-their-client/” title=”What Stakers Check on Their Client”>what elevated core CPI print means there is a meaningful probability of a Federal Reserve rate hike,” adding that it “could serve as a speed bump for the crypto market.” He nevertheless projected that any pullback would be limited in magnitude.

The U.S. Department of Labor reported that August CPI rose 3.4% year-over-year and 0.4% month-over-month. Both figures matched the consensus estimates compiled by Dow Jones. Core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, rose 2.4% year-over-year, in line with expectations, but climbed 0.3% month-over-month, exceeding the 0.2% forecast by 0.1 percentage point. The market’s focus was not on the headline number but on the month-over-month increase in core inflation.

    Indicator July August August Consensus
    CPI MoM 0.1% 0.4% 0.4%
    CPI YoY 3.4% 3.4% 3.4%
    Core CPI MoM 0.2% 0.3% 0.2%
    Core CPI YoY 2.5% 2.4% 2.4%

Note: Month-over-month figures are seasonally adjusted. July and August actuals are from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

Pandl explained that while the data poses a near-term headwind, it could actually present an opportunity for investors who failed to enter during August’s price surge. A correction phase could offer a fresh buying window.

The CPI release drew heightened market attention as it came just ahead of the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy decision. The Fed will hold its Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting on September 15–16 and announce its rate decision on the 16th. Multiple Fed officials have signaled they are prepared to raise rates if August inflation data fails to show a deceleration in price pressures. The last time the Fed raised rates was three years ago, in July 2023.

The Fed’s benchmark rate currently stands at 3.50–3.75% per annum, having been held steady at the July meeting. According to the CME FedWatch Tool, the probability of a 0.25 percentage point hike at next week’s meeting rose to approximately 86% following the CPI release, up from 72% the previous day. In the bond market, the 2-year U.S. Treasury yield climbed to its highest level in more than two years, reflecting rate-hike expectations.

U.S. inflation has been on a downward trajectory since peaking in 2022 but has yet to reach the Fed’s 2% target. It fell to 2.4% in February of this year, but rebounded to three-year highs after President Donald Trump initiated military action against Iran. On a monthly basis, the rate jumped to 3.3% in March, peaked at 4.2% in May—the highest since April 2023—then moderated to 3.5% in June before holding at 3.4% in July and August.

Note: Based on non-seasonally adjusted index.

A substantial portion of August’s price increase stemmed from fuel costs. According to the same release, the gasoline index rose 3.9% month-over-month, accounting for more than one-third of the overall August increase. The energy index was 16.3% higher than a year earlier, with gasoline up 27.4%.

Meanwhile, the prospect of a Fed rate hike could heighten tensions with the White House. President Trump has publicly demanded rate cuts to stimulate the economy and has exerted unprecedented pressure on the Fed’s independence. If the Fed actually raises rates, political friction appears unavoidable.

Immediately following the Fed’s decision, Japan and Taiwan will also hold monetary policy meetings in quick succession. The Bank of Japan raised its benchmark rate by 0.25 percentage points to 1.00% per annum in June and held steady in July, while Taiwan’s central bank has kept rates frozen for nine consecutive meetings through June. With three central bank decisions clustered in the same week, whether the Fed pivots toward tightening—and how that might influence rate decisions in Japan and Taiwan—is drawing considerable attention.

Central Bank Meeting Schedule Current Policy Rate
    U.S. Federal Reserve (FOMC) Sept 15–16 3.50–3.75% p.a.
Bank of Japan (BOJ) Sept 17–18 1.00% p.a.
Taiwan Central Bank Sept 17 Rediscount rate 2.00% p.a.

Note: Meeting dates are based on each country’s local calendar.

The crypto market has been highly sensitive to shifts in rate expectations in recent months. Rate hikes generally raise the discount rate applied to risk assets, exerting downward pressure on bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Pandl’s remarks are likely to serve as a reference point for investors seeking to gauge how these macro developments could impact the digital asset market.
