Crypto Wallet & Trading News
Coinbase is reverting the name of its self-custodial app from Base App back to Coinbase Wallet, roughly 14 months after the original rename. The company relaunched the product as Base App in July 2025, pitching it as an “everything app” with social networking, messaging, payments, and trading built in. That social experiment did not deliver the adoption Coinbase expected.
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong acknowledged in March that the social features “didn’t quite work.” In July, Base creator Jesse Pollak handed leadership of the app to Jordan “Cobie” Fish after similarly conceding that the social and creator elements had fallen short. The rebrand to Coinbase Wallet took effect Sept. 8.
A “Test Kitchen” for Assets Not Yet on the Main Exchange
Ryan Kass, head of product for Coinbase Wallet, told The Block the app will now serve as Coinbase’s “test kitchen” for assets and experiences that are not yet available on its centralized exchange. The first example isperpetual futures powered by Hyperliquid. Prediction markets and tokenized stocks are also supported through the wallet.
Kass told Decrypt the rebrand signals the app’s ability to reach beyond any single network. “The rebrand back to Coinbase Wallet is a representation that you can access any asset, regardless of what chain it’s on, regardless of the brand of asset on crypto,” he said. The wallet now supports more than 10 networks, including Base, Solana (SOL), Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), BNB Chain (BNB), Robinhood Chain, Monad, Optimism, Arbitrum, Polygon and Avalanche. Robinhood Chain and Monad are new additions compared with what the Base App previously supported.

Coinbase Wallet Stays Self-Custodial With No KYC Required
The wallet remains fully self-custodial, meaning users hold their own keys. Assets become available by default once minted on a supported chain, Kass said, and the app will automatically detect and hide scam or malicious tokens. New asset classes such as prediction markets and tokenized stocks go through compliance and product reviews before appearing in the app.
Coinbase is pitching the wallet around “no KYC, no waiting, and no borders,” with users able to download the app and begin trading within minutes. Some features remain subject to geographic restrictions, according to the company’s website. Coinbase monetizes the wallet through trading and product fees but declined to share details on the fee structure. It also declined to say whether the shift toward trading has grown the app’s user base.
Kass said Base remains central to the wallet’s experience, with Base assets surfacing naturally in the app as they trend. He also addressed the competitive dynamic with Robinhood directly. “Right now, Robinhood Chain is very hot, but Base Chain is really fast and offers super cheap fees,” he told Decrypt. “We believe that this stuff is cyclical, and when the rotation is back to Base Chain, Coinbase Wallet will be ready.”
