Crypto asset manager Bitwise announced on September 10 that it will liquidate its spot Dogecoin ETF (BWOW), which launched in November 2025 and is shutting down after less than a year of operation. BWOW’s net assets stood at only approximately $720,000, with just 50,000 shares outstanding, as trading volume and liquidity remained persistently weak. The fund’s final trading day is set for October 14, with remaining shareholders receiving cash distributions based on net asset value on October 22. The same day, Bitwise also announced the liquidation of an Ethereum and Treasuries rotation strategy ETF. Market data shows the three spot Dogecoin ETFs combined hold only about $12.31 million in net assets, signaling that meme coin ETFs are entering a consolidation phase.

Dogecoin ETF Hype Fades: Bitwise Liquidates BWOW Less Than a Year After Launch

Crypto asset manager Bitwise (Bitwise Investment Advisers) announced on September 10 that it will liquidate and close its spot Dogecoin (DOGE) ETF, the “Bitwise Dogecoin ETF” (BWOW). The fund only listed on NYSE Arca in November 2025 and is shutting down after less than a year of operation, making it one of the first cases on Wall Street where a meme coin packaged as a standard exchange-traded product has been quickly pulled from the market.

According to Bitwise’s statement, the liquidation decision is effective immediately, aimed at continuously optimizing its product lineup in response to shifting investor demand. The fund’s final trading day on NYSE Arca is expected to be October 14, when shareholders can still sell their holdings on the secondary market. On October 22, remaining shareholders will receive cash distributions based on the per-share net asset value calculated on October 21, with no additional action required.

    Weak Assets and Trading Volume

BWOW’s scale never managed to grow. According to the fund’s official website, as of September 8, BWOW’s net assets totaled only approximately $721,815 (about NT$23 million), far short of the scale targets set at launch. The fund held 8,195,053.02 DOGE tokens, with trust holdings valued at approximately $721,877.64 and only 50,000 shares outstanding.

Liquidity was equally thin. Data from September 8 showed BWOW’s 30-day median bid-ask spread at 0.61%, with a premium/discount of -1.29% that day. Looking back at its first week of trading, the fund saw single-day volume of roughly $3 million (about NT$95 million), but trading enthusiasm quickly faded thereafter.

The broader spot Dogecoin ETF market has also underperformed. According to SoSoValue, as of September 9, the three spot Dogecoin ETFs on the market held combined net assets of only about $12.31 million (about NT$390 million), with a single-day net outflow of approximately $760,000 (about NT$24 million) recorded on September 2.

Meme Coin ETFs Enter a Shakeout Phase

BWOW’s liquidation is not an isolated event. In August, Hashdex liquidated its spot <a href="https://xpertsstudio.com/singapore-man-22-admits-to-245m-bitcoin-heist-ring/” title=”Singapore Man, 22, Admits to $245M Bitcoin Heist Ring”>Bitcoin ETF; on the same day, Bitwise also announced the closure of another Ethereum-related product. Additionally, Bitwise announced the same day that it will liquidate the “Bitwise Trendwise Ethereum and Treasuries Rotation Strategy ETF” (AETH), with a final trading day of October 2 and a liquidation date set for October 13. Market observers note that crypto asset ETFs are entering a survival-of-the-fittest screening phase, with capital clearly concentrating in products with scale advantages.

Bitwise did not explicitly state the specific reasons for liquidating BWOW in its statement, describing it only as part of product lineup optimization. The company continues to expand in other areas, with its Solana ETF surpassing $1 billion in assets (about NT$32 billion) and its XRP fund exceeding $500 million (about NT$16 billion), a stark contrast to BWOW’s micro-scale.

    Regulatory and Market Background

BWOW’s management fee was 0.34%, with fees waived on the first $500 million in assets during the first month of listing, but the fund never came close to that threshold. Notably, BWOW was not registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940, meaning it did not carry the investor protections provided under that legislation.

Dogecoin’s own market performance has also been relatively weak. Around the time the liquidation news emerged, DOGE was trading near $0.084 (about NT$2.7), down roughly 3.2% over 24 hours, with a market capitalization of approximately $13.1 billion (about NT$410 billion). The overall crypto market sentiment index stood at 69, in greed territory, though that metric is not specific to Dogecoin.

In Japan, platforms such as bitFlyer offer Dogecoin trading, but crypto asset ETFs have not yet been approved. Following the implementation of the revised Financial Instruments and Exchange Act in July, market expectations are that initial approvals will focus primarily on Bitcoin and Ethereum.

    Impact on Investors

For BWOW shareholders, the liquidation process is relatively straightforward. Shareholders can sell on the secondary market before the close of trading on October 14; if they hold to the end, cash distributions will be automatically credited to their brokerage accounts. However, these distributions will be treated as taxable events, and investors should be aware of tax implications if there is a difference between their cost basis and the distribution amount.

From an industry perspective, BWOW’s rapid exit highlights the reality that single meme coin ETFs struggle to sustain operations when demand is insufficient. Bitwise’s decision to concentrate re and XRP also reflects issuers’ strategic pivot amid intensifying competition in the crypto ETF space
