Bitcoin recovery slows as investor caution grows

Bitcoin (BTC) prices rebounded slightly, trading above $79,000 at the time of writing on Wednesday after falling more than 2.4% over the previous two days.

Early signs suggest institutional investors are becoming more cautious amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, after spot exchange-traded funds recorded modest outflows on Tuesday.

At the same time, derivatives activity remains subdued, with traders gradually adopting a more cautious stance toward the world’s largest cryptocurrency.

Modest ETF outflows as US-Iran tensions escalate

Early signs point to a cautious pullback in institutional demand for Bitcoin this week. Data from SoSoValue showed that spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded modest net outflows of $45.65 million on Tuesday, ending a three-day streak of inflows that began last week.

Although the outflows were limited, they also highlight growing investor caution amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

In the latest developments in the conflict, US forces targeted five Iranian oil tankers on Tuesday, sinking one of them, in retaliation after Tehran targeted a US warship twice. The strikes hit four Iranian oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, as well as another tanker near Kharg Island, home to a major oil terminal off the Iranian coast, according to the BBC.

The developments have broadened the confrontation between the United States and Iran and kept the geopolitical risk premium elevated, potentially weighing on investors’ appetite for riskier assets and adding pressure on Bitcoin.

Bitcoin derivatives remain weak as sentiment turns more cautious

A report from K33 Research on Tuesday indicated that Bitcoin derivatives activity remains subdued across both the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) and perpetual futures markets.

Open interest in CME Bitcoin futures increased slightly, while the contango widened, with October contracts trading at a 0.5% premium to September contracts, the widest spread since December 2025. However, annualized futures premiums remain below 5%, pointing to cautious investor positioning.

“Perpetual markets show a similar trend, with average funding rates reaching 5.2% over the past week before briefly falling toward 0% over the weekend, while the short-lived increase in open interest has been fully reversed, bringing it back to around 320,000 Bitcoin,” a K33 Research analyst said.

“Overall, leverage remains low, while sentiment is gradually turning more defensive.”

Alongside this defensive positioning, analysts said, as outlined in the previous report, that Bitcoin’s technical picture remains positive but has yet to establish a decisive direction, with attention still focused on US inflation data due on Friday.

Escalating tensions between the United States and Iran are fueling concerns over energy supplies and renewed inflationary pressures, which could increase the likelihood of tighter monetary policy from the Federal Reserve and, in turn, weigh on Bitcoin.

Brent jumps above $100 a barrel as Middle East conflict escalates

Oil prices rose on Wednesday, with Brent crude breaking above $100 a barrel to reach a six-week high as the conflict in the Middle East escalated and concerns over oil flows intensified, catching up with physical crude and fuel prices that had already surpassed the psychological threshold.

The euro rose against a basket of major currencies in European trading on Wednesday, extending gains against the US dollar for a third consecutive day and hitting a two-week high, supported by the continued decline in the US currency ahead of key inflation data in the United States.
