Ethereum(CRYPTO: ETH) co-founder Vitalik Buterin expressed optimism on Sunday about the future of cryptocurrency security, contradicting predictions of a Bitcoin(CRYPTO: BTC) crash due to AI threats.
Buterin Bets on Bitcoin’s Stability
Buterin responded to an X post by Silicon Valley entrepreneur Liron Shapira, pushing back against a prediction that AI could undermine Bitcoin’s security and trigger a more than 50% price crash within two years.
Buterin, however, took the opposite side, expressing optimism about long-term cybersecurity and confidence in Bitcoin’s ability to handle issues that do not require social consensus.
He added that he could offer a conventional bet against Shapira, but he doesn’t need to, as roughly 90% of his net worth is already held in cryptocurrency.
Does AI Pose a Threat to Bitcoin?
This disagreement comes in the wake of increasing concerns about the potential threats AI poses to cryptocurrency security
In May, Buterin backed “Formal Verification,” an AI-powered solution to combat these threats.
“Formal verification,” which is the use of mathematical proofs to verify that software works as intended, can help make blockchain protocols more secure, he added.
Notably, AI safety researcher Roman Yampolskiy warned last month that advanced AI systems could become “really amazing hackers,” making it nearly “impossible” for the average person to keep their Bitcoin secure.
A Chainalysisreport found that crypto scams with on-chain links to AI vendors extracted 4.5 times more revenue per operation than scams without such links in 2025.
Price Action: At the time of writing, BTC was trading at $78,739.79, down 0.75% in the last 24 hours, according to data from Benzinga Pro.
