- Ethereum developers have added Frame Transactions to the Hegotá upgrade roadmap.
- The feature will separate the account that initiates a transaction from the account that pays the gas.
- Users will be able to pay fees with stablecoins or delegate them to an app.
Ethereum is preparing to roll out a feature that will let users make transactions without needing to hold ETH to pay gas fees.
This refers to EIP-8141 (Frame Transactions). During a developers’ meeting on August 27, the proposal was moved to Scheduled for Inclusion, meaning it has been officially slated for inclusion in the network’s next major upgrade — Hegotá, CoinDesk reported.
Under the current plan, it is expected to take place in 2027, after the Glamsterdam upgrade.
“Over the past few months, significant progress on EIP-8141 has quietly taken place,”wroteEthereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, who is one of the proposal’s 10 authors.
How Will Frame Transactions Work?
Right now, to make a transaction on Ethereum, a user needs to hold some Ethereum to pay for gas. This creates a problem, for example, for a wallet owner who only holds USDT or USDC: even with enough funds in stablecoins, they cannot transfer them without Ethereum to cover the fee.
The technology splits a transaction into separate stages. One stage is responsible for the user’s authorization of the action, another specifies who pays the fee, and the remaining stages execute the required operations. As a result, the account sending the assets and the account paying the gas no longer need to be the same.
For example, a payments app could cover the user’s fee itself. Another option is for the user to pay the fee in stablecoins, while the service converts them and sends the required amount in Ethereum to Ethereum. At the same time, the network itself will still receive payment in Ethereum.
With Frame Transactions, it will be possible to bundle multiple actions into a single operation. In addition, users will be able to configure their own transaction authorization rules. This will make it possible to change access keys or wallet security without moving funds to a new address.
At the same time, EIP-8141 is still in draft form, so its technical details may still change. As of today, Frame Transactions are not available to regular users, CoinDesk noted.
As a reminder, earlier Vitalik Buterin explained how Ethereum is preparing to scale using a new transaction model.
