The debate took place on social media platform X. Commentator Liron Shapira, who writes about the risks of AI, laid down the terms, and Buterin replied that his own portfolio is already positioned to bet on the opposite outcome, according to <a href="https://ru.beincrypto.com/buterin-prognoz-obval-bitkoina-ii-shapira-spor/” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>beincrypto.com.
Shapira hosts the ‘Doom Debates’ podcast on the risks of AI, and he published his forecast on Monday. In his assessment, the odds of <a href="https://xpertsstudio.com/bitcoin-takes-79-of-crypto-etf-weekly-inflows-as-funds-add-1-24b/” title=”Bitcoin Takes 79% of Crypto ETF Weekly Inflows as Funds Add $1.24B”>Bitcoin losing more than half its value within two years are roughly one in one.
In his scenario, he focuses not on demand but on security. Shapira believes that AI will undermine the network security safeguards on which cryptocurrency holders rely. Buterin responded in the same thread a few hours later.
Bitcoin’s security relies on mining power and cryptographic hash functions. However, Shapira did not specify exactly which aspect of this security artificial intelligence would weaken.
At the time of writing, Bitcoin is trading at around $79,827 — meaning a 50 per cent drop would push the price down to approximately $40,000.
Why Buterin is confident in the BTC network
Buterin stated that, in the long term, he is optimistic about cybersecurity. However, the transition itself, he said, is proving far more difficult.
He is confident that Bitcoin will be able to cope with any threats that do not require the consent of the entire community to be mitigated. These include, for example, updates to clients and mining pools to fend off attacks at the network level. However, he assesses the likelihood of critical vulnerabilities in the hashes or the Proof-of-Work protocol as virtually zero.
Buterin added that Shapira might express a similar concern regarding Ethereum – after all, they both hold a cryptocurrency that would follow Bitcoin’s lead if it were to decline.
The threat posed by quantum computing to Ethereum has been a subject of debate since as far back as 2026. Researchers have already begun to estimate the costs of transitioning to post-quantum cryptography.
Buterin chose not to place a monetary bet on this dispute, but instead referred to the structure of his own portfolio.
“I’d offer a bet, but given the way my investments are structured, I’m effectively already holding one. Around 90 per cent of my portfolio is already staked on this,” Buterin wrote on the social network X.
Thus, the debate over a potential collapse in the Bitcoin price due to AI boils down to a matter of timing. Shapiro is giving it two years to prove his point, whilst Buterin is already taking the opposite stance today.
