Standard Charteredhas launched spot <a href="https://xpertsstudio.com/bitwise-cio-calls-bitcoin-and-zcash-assets-to-own-for-the-next-decade/” title=”Bitwise CIO Calls Bitcoin and Zcash Assets to Own for the Next Decade”>Bitcoin and Ether trading services forinstitutional clientsin theUAEthrough its Standard Chartered DIFC entity, regulated by the Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA). Announced on September 3, 2026, supportsBTC/USDandETH/USDtrading pairs for eligible institutional clients, expanding the bank’s digital asset footprint in one of the region’s most dynamically regulated crypto markets.

A G-SIB Brings Spot Crypto Trading to DIFC

According toStandard Chartered’s press release, this is the first time aGlobal Systemically Important Bank(G-SIB) has offered spot Bitcoin and Ether trading to institutional clients in the UAE. Standard Chartered also stated that it is currently the only global bank offering institutional digital asset spot trading in the region.

The service is rolled out through Standard Chartered DIFC, located within the Dubai International Financial Centre and under the supervision of the DFSA. Eligible institutional clients can trade Bitcoin and Ethereaturing an interface similar to the foreign exchange platforms already used by many financial institutions and corporate clients

The product is structured as deliverable spot trading, meaning spot transactions with delivery of the underlying asset, rather than derivative contracts or indirect exposure-SIB list comprises29 banks, highlighting the scale and level of supervision applicable to the banking group to which Standard Chartered belongs

    From Custody to Execution

Standard Chartered began offeringdigital asset custody servicesin the UAE in September 2024, following licensing by the DFSA in the DIFC. The initial service supported Bitcoin and Ethereum, with Brevan Howard Digital cited as its first client.

The addition of spot trading moves Standard Chartered’s UAE operations beyond custody into execution and settlement for institutional clients. Clients can settle trades with a custodian of their choice, including Standard Chartered’s own digital asset custody solution.

Prior to the UAE, Standard Chartered launched institutional Bitcoin and Ether spot trading through its UK branch in July 2025. This indicates that the new rollout is an expansion of an existing digital asset trading capability, rather than an isolated test in the Middle East market.

    UAE’s Regulated Crypto Push

The DIFC is one of the jurisdictions in the UAE that has established adedicated frameworkfor digital assets. The DFSA began rolling out its Crypto Token regime in 2022 and brought major changes into effect on January 12, 2026, including a requirement for firms to assess and recognize token suitability before offering related services. These changes also raised requirements for market integrity, investor protection, financial crime controls, custody, and operational resilience.

Rola Abu Manneh, CEO UAE, Middle East and Pakistan at Standard Chartered, stated that the UAE has developed “a clear digital assets regulatory framework” supporting institutional participation and innovation. For Standard Chartered, this framework enables the spot Bitcoin and Ether service at DIFC to be launched within a regulated financial framework, rather than as a retail product.

According toChainalysis, the UAE received over$56 billionin crypto value during the 2024-2025 reporting period, up 33% from the previous period. Large institutional transactions in the UAE grew by 54.7%, while institutional transfers rose by 37.2%, indicating that the institutional segment represents a significant portion of the market’s crypto growth.

Standard Chartered’s new service currently supports BTC/USD and ETH/USD. According to CoinGecko on September 4, 2026, Bitcoin traded around $81,000 with a market capitalization of approximately $1.63 trillion, while Ether traded around $2,500 with a market capitalization of over $300 billion.

    The Institutional Read-Through

Standard Chartered is integrating spot Bitcoin and Ether trading into the electronic trading channels that institutional clients already use for traditional markets like foreign exchange, rather than placing the service on a separate crypto-native platform.

For institutional clients, trading through a regulated G-SIB bank may better align with internal processes regarding onboarding, counterparty management, settlement, custody, and risk control. These are factors that typically influence the speed at which financial institutions or large corporations adopt digital assets.

Standard Chartered has not disclosed expected trading volumes, initial client numbers, fees, spreads, or revenue contributions from the UAE service. The short-term impact on the bank’s operations therefore remains unquantified.

This move indicates that Standard Chartered continues to expand its institutional digital asset segment in line with the bank’s existing trading and custody infrastructure.
