Standard Chartered has launched institutional spot trading in Bitcoin and Ether in the United Arab Emirates, becoming the first global systemically important bank to offer the service in the Gulf country.
The bank said eligible institutional clients can trade deliverable Bitcoin and Ether through its electronic trading platforms, giving them direct access to the two cryptocurrencies.
The service allows clients to buy or sell Ether, the native cryptocurrency of the Ethereum blockchain, for immediate delivery rather than through derivative contracts.
According to Standard Chartered, the new offering is connected to its existing trading infrastructure, enabling clients to execute cryptocurrency transactions through its foreign exchange platforms.
The move expands the bank’s digital asset operations in the UAE by adding cryptocurrency trading services to its custody business, which was introduced in the country in September 2024.
Clients can also settle their cryptocurrency transactions through a custodian of their choice, including Standard Chartered’s digital asset custody service.
Standard Chartered previously launched institutional spot trading in Bitcoin and Ether through its UK branch in July 2025, becoming the first G-SIB to offer deliverable spot trading in the two cryptocurrencies to institutional clients.
