Blockchain has spent years promising to change how people pay, invest, transact, and deal with the government. At Philippine Blockchain Week 2026, there were signs that some of those promises are becoming less theoretical.

Across three days at the SMX Convention Center Manila, the conversation stretched from digital identity and government transparency to payments, tokenized bonds, self-custody wallets, and real-world assets.

More interestingly, people could finally point to actual users.

That matters for an industry that has spent much of the past decade talking about potential.

One of the biggest examples is coming from the Philippine government. The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) said blockchain is already supporting the country’s digital national ID infrastructure.

“We already have 91 million digital national IDs. And to make sure that we have the trust and confidence of our people to use the digital national ID, we use blockchain,” DICT undersecretary David Almirol told CoinGeek.

The agency said banks, e-wallets, and financial institutions are already using the IDs.

Over at the Department of Budget and Management (DBM), the problem being tackled is very different: fake documents.

“We use blockchain to make sure that the action documents that we released to the government agencies are immutable and easily verifiable to a blockchain portal,” DBM Undersecretary Maria Francesca “Sasa” Del Rosario said.

With AI making digital manipulation increasingly easy, Del Rosario said the public needs a simple way to check whether government documents are legitimate.

    Then there is money.

Blockchain Council of the Philippines’ Catz Jalandoni pointed to something Filipinos immediately understand, the cost of sending it.

“The fact that we are paying less for money transfers, up to zero for money transfers, blockchain is a very important technology that enabled that to happen,” she said.

And blockchain is beginning to change what Filipinos can invest in as well.

PDAX’s Nichel Gaba said around 700,000 new bondholders now hold Philippine treasuries in token form following the introduction of tokenized bonds. The company also partners with GCash for GCrypto, giving its services potential exposure to millions more Filipinos.

For Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Commissioner Rogelio Quevedo, tokenization could go much further.

“I believe it is this tokenization of assets wherein we can lead and which will jolt our stock exchange through more investment, which will enable our OFWs to invest in these real-world assets,” Quevedo said.

Away from the main stage, the exhibition floor told another part of the story.

Builders were showcasing decentralized exchanges, payment infrastructure, wallets, and easier ways of getting money into and out of digital assets. Gin Lee of UniversePro said its decentralized exchange is aiming to become “an all-in-one trading platform” and currently has 10,000 users. Another startup developing simpler on-and-off ramps reported about 1,000 users after launching only this year.

The numbers vary enormously, and not every project will make it.

But perhaps that is precisely what makes this year’s PBW more interesting.

The conversation is becoming less about convincing people that blockchain has potential and more about proving that a product solves a problem, is easy to use, and can attract real users.

Media personality James Deakin captured that change well.

“I love all the things in the white paper. But you had to believe because it did feel like something that was not tangible,” he said. “Now you can spend it—GCash, Coins.ph. This is something now that opens up to a use case for everyday people.”

That may be where blockchain in the Philippines is heading next.

Not necessarily toward bigger promises, but toward something much harder to deliver: technology ordinary people can use.
