Institutional investors moved nearly $1 billion in Bitcoin and Ethereum over a 48-hour period, according to on-chain data. An unidentified entity sent 52,739 ETH worth about $129 million to six centralized exchanges including Binance and OKX, while still holding 101,561 ETH valued at $249 million. Trading firm Cumberland moved in the opposite direction, withdrawing 15,390 ETH worth $37.66 million from Binance to custody wallets. Japanese investment firm Metaplanet executed its largest single Bitcoin transfer ever, sending 2,400 BTC worth about $186 million to Coinbase Prime, bringing its weekly total to roughly 7,200 BTC valued at $720 million, or 17% of its 43,000 BTC reserve.
Key Elements

Institutional investors executed a flurry of high-value cryptocurrency transfers over the past two days, moving close to $1 billion worth of Bitcoin and Ethereum across exchanges and custody wallets, according to on-chain data compiled by market observers.
The activity was dominated by three distinct movements: an unidentified entity sent roughly $129 million in Ether to six centralized exchanges, trading firm Cumberland moved $37.66 million in ETH off Binance, and Japanese investment company Metaplanet transferred its largest single batch of Bitcoin ever to Coinbase Prime.
Unidentified Entity Sends 52,739 ETH to Exchanges
An unnamed institution transferred 52,739 ETH to six centralized exchanges, including Binance and OKX, over a two-day span. The holdings, valued at approximately $129 million, were first consolidated into two wallets before being distributed across the platforms.
The addresses still hold 101,561 ETH worth about $249 million, leaving the entity with substantial exposure even after the recent transfers.
On-chain history reveals the Ether was originally withdrawn from Coinbase in 2021 and 2022 at an average cost of $1,700 per token. The assets were subsequently staked on the Ethereum network in 2023 and removed from staking positions in January of last year.
Large inflows to centralized exchanges are often interpreted by traders as a precursor to selling, though the data alone does not confirm intent. The movement nonetheless ranks among the most notable Ethereum transfers observed in recent sessions.
Cumberland Pulls ETH Off Binance
Cumberland, an institutional crypto trading firm, moved in the opposite direction during the same window. The company withdrew 15,390 ETH worth approximately $37.66 million from Binance and shifted the assets to wallets outside the exchange.
The transaction indicates Cumberland relocated a portion of its Binance-held Ether to its own custody addresses, a pattern typically associated with longer-term holding rather than immediate liquidation.
The contrasting directions of these transfers underscore that large investors are not pursuing a uniform strategy. While one institution pushed significant ETH toward exchanges, Cumberland simultaneously pulled assets away, highlighting the difficulty of drawing market-wide conclusions from any single transaction.
Metaplanet’s Record Bitcoin Transfer
On the Bitcoin side, Metaplanet’s activity drew the most attention. The Tokyo-based investment firm sent approximately 2,400 BTC worth about $186 million to Coinbase Prime in its latest transaction, marking the largest single Bitcoin transfer in the company’s history.
Over the past week, Metaplanet has moved roughly 7,200 BTC to Coinbase Prime, with a combined value estimated at around $720 million. That represents 17% of the company’s total Bitcoin reserves, which stand at approximately 43,000 BTC.
The scale of the transfers has intensified scrutiny of Metaplanet’s Bitcoin strategy. The company has emerged as one of the most aggressive corporate accumulators of Bitcoin, and movements of this magnitude are closely watched for signals about potential supply pressure or strategic repositioning.
What the Whale Activity Signals
The recent transactions confirm elevated activity among large Bitcoin and Ethereum holders. However, on-chain analysts caution against reading too much into any individual transfer.
Assets sent to exchanges are not necessarily sold immediately, and coins withdrawn from exchanges are not guaranteed to be held long-term. Investors and analysts must weigh transfer direction, wallet history, and the prior behavior of the institutions involved before drawing conclusions about market direction.
The data does make one thing clear: institutional actors are moving assets at a scale approaching billions of dollars across both exchange and off-exchange venues, keeping whale-watching firmly on the agenda for crypto market participants in the weeks ahead.
