When Trump Was Skeptical of Crypto

During his first term as president in July 2019, Trump said he was no “fan” of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, whose value, he added, was based on “thin air.”

“Unregulated Crypto Assets can facilitate unlawful behavior, including drug trade and other illegal activity….,” he added.

Trump also asserted that the dollar is America’s only “real currency,” describing it as both “dependable and reliable.”

Bitcoin’s Surge Since Trump’s Remarks

When Trump made these statements, one Bitcoin was worth $11,815.99.

Fast forward to August 2026; the asset’s price has zoomed to $77,525. That’s an increase of 556%. So, a $1,000 investment would have grown into $6,561 today

The ‘Crypto President’

Since his return to power, Trump has endorsed cryptocurrency, completely setting aside the negative remarks he made in 2019.

He now frequently talks aboutmaking the U.S. the world’s “Crypto Capital” and supports clear regulations for the asset class

Trump signed an Executive Order last year to establish a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, directing officials to develop budget-neutral strategies for acquiring additional BTC.

Interestingly, he said that Bitcoin “takes a lot of pressure off the dollar”—the very currency he otherwise insisted is America’s only real money.

He’s also profiting from the asset class, disclosing over $1 billion in cryptocurrency incomeduring his first year of presidency.
