This Popular Cryptocurrency Exchange Thinks You Will.”>cryptocurrency projects tied to U.S. President Donald Trump have suffered at least $4.7 billion in losses. Meanwhile, Trump himself earned no less than $1.4 billion from crypto-related ventures in 2025, according to a report by advocacy group Public Citizen.
According to the study, most of the losses remain unrealized — the assets have declined in value, but investors have not yet sold them. The estimate also includes realized losses where trading data allowed them to be calculated.
The biggest losses are linked to the TRUMP memecoin, which the president launched in January 2025, three days before his inauguration. Public Citizen estimates that about 1 million of roughly 1.6 million retail wallets that bought the token on decentralized exchanges were collectively down $3.2 billion.
Realized losses amounted to about $400 million. TRUMP reached an all-time high of $73.43 in January 2025 and was trading at around $2.73 by Friday.
Early buyers captured most of the profits. Wallets that purchased TRUMP during the first two days after launch accounted for nearly 90% of all gains among retail investors.
Public Citizen notes that Trump himself did not invest his own capital to acquire the tokens: they were allocated to a company linked to him. Additional income came from licensing fees, meaning most of the proceeds may effectively have been profit.
WLFI and Trump Media’s Bitcoin holdings
At least another $1 billion in estimated losses is tied to World Liberty Financial. The figure includes about $1.04 billion in paper losses at Nasdaq-listed AI Financial Corp., which acquired 7.28 billion WLFI tokens for roughly $1.46 billion in August 2025.
After announcing its partnership with World Liberty Financial, AI Financial Corp. shares fell 91% — from $7.04 to $0.642.
Another roughly $450 million in unrealized losses comes from Trump Media’s Bitcoin treasury. As of June 30, the company held 9,477 Bitcoin purchased for about $1.006 billion. At the time the report was prepared, they were worth approximately $557 million.
Public Citizen also estimated losses of at least $9.3 million for buyers of three Trump Digital Trading Card collections. Holders of the USD1 stablecoin were assigned no losses because the asset maintained its dollar peg.
Separately, Trump reported at least $1.4 billion in cryptocurrency-related income for 2025 in his latest financial disclosure.
As a reminder, an Abu Dhabi sheikh became the largest investor in the Trump family’s crypto bank.
