After recently breaking decisively above the $80,000 mark, Bitcoin has established a new trading phase. Andy Bell, Director of Asset Management at GSR, pointed out that this price level marks a substantial shift in the underlying market structure. On Monday, Bitcoin briefly touched $81,272, marking the first test of this key level since May. Meanwhile, U.S. Bitcoin spot ETFs recorded nearly $2 billion in net inflows over five consecutive trading days, further confirming a notable return of institutional demand.
According to data compiled by Woofun AI, approximately $1.06 billion in positions were liquidated as prices moved rapidly higher. Alongside rising options activity and perpetual contract funding rates, these indicators suggest that the current rally enjoys relatively broad-based support. Within GSR’s Core3 strategy, the portfolio includes Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana, with Solana commanding a 44% allocation weight—reflecting that investors are turning their attention to blockchain networks that support tokenization technology and stablecoin applications.
U.S. Debt Scale and Fiscal Deficit Become Core Market Focus
Robbie Mitchnick, Head of Digital Assets at BlackRock (BLK), has redefined the recent drivers behind Bitcoin’s price action, suggesting that its movements are more influenced by U.S. debt burdens than by pure crypto policy dynamics. Data released by the U.S. Treasury on Wednesday showed that as of August 18, total federal debt had reached $40.05 trillion, more than double the level in 2017. With spending persistently exceeding revenue, the government is forced to borrow to cover deficits, and interest payments have become a heavy burden. Net interest outlays in 2025 are approaching $1 trillion, accounting for more than 14% of total federal spending.
Against this backdrop, despite pressure on equity markets and heightened volatility in bond markets, Bitcoin has bucked the trend to post its largest three-day gain since 2023, with prices currently holding near $80,000. Mitchnick stated that renewed market concern over debt and deficit levels—this macro-risk focus—helps boost the performance of alternative assets such as Bitcoin and gold. Prominent investors Stanley Druckenmiller and Ray Dalio have previously warned about the U.S. fiscal trajectory, suggesting that high borrowing and persistent deficits could become enduring issues for global markets in the years ahead.
Regulatory Impact Fades as Market Focus Shifts to Application Ecosystem Expansion
Although discussions surrounding the U.S. CLARITY Act have cooled somewhat, Bitcoin has not lost its upward momentum as a result. Mitchnick noted that the Act’s impact on Bitcoin is relatively limited, given that Bitcoin has already gained broad regulatory recognition, while decentralized finance and other crypto sectors stand to benefit more from clear rulemaking. Regulatory clarity is viewed by the market as a potential upside factor, but investors have not priced it in as a core scenario at present.
At the same time, traditional investors indirectly holding Bitcoin through ETFs are driving a diversification of capital flows. Blockchain networks are being revalued for their payment and application functions, which is seen as a critical turning point—following institutional entry—where the market extends its focus from Bitcoin’s pure monetary properties to the underlying infrastructure value. The macro backdrop of $40 trillion in U.S. debt has further heightened market attention on scarce assets. Robbie Mitchnick added that developments on Capitol Hill remain an important variable that the market continues to monitor and await.
