X is preparing to add cryptocurrency trade buttons to its Cashtags feature, according to former product chief Nikita Bier. The integration would let users execute buy and sell orders without leaving the platform, building on existing infrastructure that displays Solana and Ethereum charts inside posts and recognizes token contract addresses. No launch date, supported token list, or execution partner has been disclosed. The move follows an April rollout of Smart Cashtags and a Wealthsimple trading pilot in Canada that drew an estimated $1 billion in volume within 48 hours. Bier also rejected claims that X suppressed crypto accounts, attributing the current market rally instead to U.S. Treasury bond buybacks and dollar weakness. Bitcoin traded near $80,643, up 4.25% on the day. The feature’s success will depend on regulatory compliance, partner reliability, and supported markets.

X is preparing to roll out cryptocurrency trade buttons that would let users execute buy and sell orders without leaving the social platform, according to former product chief Nikita Bier. The feature builds on Cashtags, the existing infrastructure that displays Solana and Ethereum price charts directly inside posts.
Bier confirmed the development Tuesday while pushing back against claims that X had suppressed cryptocurrency-related accounts. An X user had posted that the “<a href="https://xpertsstudio.com/arthur-hayes-says-bull-market-has-begun-reveals-maelstroms-altcoin-bets-beyond-bitcoin-and-ether/" title="Arthur Hayes Says Bull Market Has Begun, Reveals Maelstrom's Altcoin Bets Beyond Bitcoin and Ether”>Bull Market is allowed to commence because Nikita is no longer shadow banning CT,” using shorthand for Crypto Twitter, the trading community on the platform. A shadowban quietly limits how many people see an account without informing its owner.
He responded by pointing to features he built during his tenure, including Cashtags and the ability to paste token contract addresses into posts. “Trade buttons coming soon,” he wrote, adding that X had no dedicated products for crypto traders before he joined.
The former executive stepped back from running product at X this month and transitioned to an advisory role, which means the rollout will fall to his successor. Neither he nor the company has disclosed a launch date, supported token list, or execution partner.
X began its latest finance push with Smart Cashtags in April, bringing real-time stock and crypto market data to iPhone users in the U.S. and Canada. The pages combine an asset’s price chart with posts discussing the same stock or token. The company paired that rollout with a Wealthsimple pilot in Canada that placed a trading button on supported Cashtag pages, allowing users to move from market information into an order through brokerage integration.
Bier described the Wealthsimple integration at the time as an early preview of a wider trading experience. The pilot drew an estimated $1 billion in volume within 48 hours, according to a report from beincrypto.com.
The product direction has shifted quickly this year. In February, direct crypto trading was still outside the initial scope of X’s Smart Cashtag plans, which were built around discovery, market information, and asset-specific conversations. By April, X had added live charts and the Wealthsimple pilot. The next step would shorten a process that currently sends traders from an X post to a wallet, decentralized exchange, or centralized trading platform to execute an order.
Trading integration could turn market information into direct transaction access through approved third-party financial service providers. X would likely rely on those partners for trade execution, customer verification, and regulatory compliance. The structure of the crypto trade buttons will determine how far X actually moves into execution. A brokerage or exchange integration could keep custody and execution with a third party, while wallet-connected or onchain trading would require a different product and compliance structure.
Partner exchanges and brokers could gain customers from X’s large audience of investors, traders, analysts, and cryptocurrency enthusiasts. X could earn referral fees or partnership revenue from completed transactions, although Bier disclosed no commercial arrangements.
Regulators may examine how X presents trading options, financial risks, advertisements, and partner responsibilities to its global audience. Clear disclosures would remain important because cryptocurrency prices can move considerably, while users may misunderstand X’s role in transactions. Regulatory safeguards, partner reliability, supported markets, and clear risk disclosures will determine the feature’s global accessibility and broader financial impact.
The trading expansion is developing alongside X Money, which began rolling out to selected U.S. Premium+ users in June. The early product includes peer-to-peer payments and Visa-backed financial services, while a subsequent feature expansion added cash-management capabilities including yield and expanded sweep coverage. Crypto trading has not been tied directly to X Money’s payment infrastructure. Bier’s current update instead places the coming trade buttons alongside Cashtags.
Bier also rejected the idea that X itself sparked the current crypto market rally. Instead, he pointed to the U.S. Treasury buying back bonds and concerns surrounding the dollar’s declining purchasing power. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent at least doubled planned purchases of long-dated government debt on Aug. 20. Critics have since attacked the $950 billion buyback plan and how Washington intends to fund it.
Markets moved fast either way. Bitcoin (BTC) traded near $80,643, up 4.25% on the day and 24.5% over the past month. Gold logged its best month since 1999.
Cashtags still covers only a few markets, so a buy button needs a wider rollout first. X has shipped charts, volume data, and address lookups so far. The buy button remains the piece that would turn a timeline into an order book.
