Bitcoin Price Hits $80,000! Why Bitcoin Is Going Up? What Is Next?
TOPONE Markets Analyst2026-08-24 16:31:18
Bitcoin (BTC) has staged a powerful recovery, briefly moving toward the $80,000 level after a sharp rally of more than 20% in a week. On August 24, 2026, Bitcoin fluctuated near $77,230 after peaking near $79,500, driven by U.S. Treasury buybacks that eased borrowing costs and boosted risk assets.
The move has reignited bullish sentiment across the cryptocurrency market and raised an important question for investors: Is Bitcoin beginning a new leg higher, or is the rally approaching a major resistance zone?
Bitcoin Price Approaches $80,000: What Happened?
Bitcoin’s latest rally developed rapidly. According to recent market analysis, Bitcoin gained more than 20% over the previous week. During the strongest phase of the rally, BTC rose approximately 24% in two days.
On August 24, Bitcoin prices continued to fluctuate, rising just 1.7% to trade at $77,230. Last Friday (August 21), Bitcoin prices surged toward the $80,000 mark, peaking near $79,500, which was a new high in over three months, before undergoing a downward correction.
| Market Indicator | Latest Development |
|---|---|
| BTC’s 24-hour move | Approximately +1.7% |
| Recent price area | Around $77,200-$77,500 |
| Key breakout level | $80,000 |
| Immediate resistance | $77,400-$77,500 |
Why Is Bitcoin Going Up?
Bitcoin’s recent price trend has shown a significant rebound, primarily due to the U.S. Treasury Department’s increased long-term Treasury buybacks on August 19. This action eased upward pressure on long-end interest rates and borrowing costs, injected liquidity into overall risk assets, and drove the rebound in Bitcoin prices.
On August 20, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen stated that “the single-operation cap for Treasury buybacks could exceed the $4 billion we previously announced.” Following this announcement, Bitcoin’s price accelerated its upward momentum.
Another catalyst is the renewed demand for U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Recent data indicates that U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs experienced their strongest week of inflows in 2026 as investors returned to crypto-related investment products during the rally. Sustained ETF inflows are arguably more significant than short-term retail enthusiasm because they suggest that institutional and traditional market capital is returning to Bitcoin.
Bitcoin’s rally was also accelerated by the derivatives market. When the price of Bitcoin moved sharply higher, traders holding leveraged short positions were forced to close those positions. This creates additional buying pressure and can produce a short squeeze, which accelerates the price move.
Currency market conditions have also become more favorable for Bitcoin. The U.S. dollar remained near multi-month lows amid concerns over government debt and Treasury policy. The dollar also recorded its largest weekly decline against Bitcoin in more than three years, which is an important tailwind for Bitcoin. However, the relationship is not one-directional. A sharp rebound in the dollar could quickly become a headwind for BTC.
Bitcoin Price Prediction: Can Bitcoin Reach $80,000?
Bitcoin has stalled and requires new catalysts to potentially break through the $80,000 threshold. The CLARITY Act could provide a new catalyst for Bitcoin price increases when it is potentially passed in September. Additionally, the Federal Reserve’s (Fed) next Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting to decide on monetary policy and interest rates will be held from September 15 to 16, 2026. If the Fed signals a rate cut, Bitcoin prices could enter a new bull market.
For Bitcoin, breaking through this threshold would signify a shift in technical resistance. In May of this year, the price of Bitcoin briefly surpassed $80,000, reaching a high of $83,000, before experiencing a sustained decline that reached a new low in over a year. This resulted in a significant accumulation of trapped overhead supply in the $74,000–$78,000 range, which the market is currently processing as selling pressure.
Looking ahead, if Bitcoin’s price convincingly breaks above $80,000, the former major resistance zone will transform into a core mid-term support level. This will also signify an absence of historical resistance above this mark. This would create an upward vacuum channel, free of overhead selling pressure and helping bulls push further toward the next dense concentration of trapped positions at $100,000.
1. Why is Bitcoin going up?
Bitcoin is rising because of several converging factors, including strong U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF inflows, renewed institutional demand, short-position liquidations, improving liquidity expectations and a weaker U.S. dollar. Recent reports showed U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs attracted approximately $1.92 billion in net inflows for the week ended August 22, marking their strongest weekly inflow in about 10 months.
2. Did Bitcoin really reach $80,000?
No. Bitcoin recently approached and briefly traded around the $79,500 level before pulling back toward the $77,000 area.
3. Are Bitcoin ETF inflows driving the rally?
Yes. ETF inflows have been a major attracted $606 million on August 20, following another strong inflow the previous day
4. What is the next resistance level for Bitcoin?
After the $80,000 psychological barrier, traders are likely to watch the $82,000-$85,000 region, followed by $90,000. A sustained breakout above $80,000 with strong spot volume and continued ETF inflows could improve the technical outlook toward higher targets.
5. Can Bitcoin reach $100,000?
Bitcoin could potentially reach $100,000 if institutional demand remains strong, ETF inflows continue and macroeconomic conditions remain supportive. However, BTC would need to gain another 25% from $80,000, and cryptocurrency markets remain highly volatile. Therefore, $100,000 should be viewed as a potential scenario rather than a guaranteed target.
