[Digital Today reporter Chi-gyu Hwang] Kristin Kim, founder of Protocol Watch, shared the latest development trends for <a href="https://xpertsstudio.com/xrp-posts-13-daily-gain-surpassing-bitcoin-and-ethereum/” title=”XRP Posts 13% Daily Gain, Surpassing Bitcoin and Ethereum”>Ethereum‘s next major upgrade, “Glamsterdam”, due in the second half of the year.

First is testnet progress. Developers launched the final developer testnet, “Devnet-8”, on Aug. 13. “Glamsterdam” developers launched the final developer testnet, “Devnet-8”, on Aug. 13.

Ethereum developers had originally planned to run a separate public testnet after the devnet. But they designed Devnet-8 so anyone can participate. If things proceed as scheduled, public testnet upgrades will begin from September.

Kim said, “Since there has been a big change in the block building process, third-party block builders should test their infrastructure against the new protocol specifications starting now.”

The block gas limit is also drawing attention. Ethereum developers set a goal in May of increasing block size by more than threefold. The final figure for a related gas repricing proposal was confirmed this week. It also confirmed that after Glamsterdam, network throughput can be increased from 60 million to 200 million without overburdening existing node operations. Barnabas, a vice president at the Ethereum Foundation, proposed including EIP 8261, which would automatically raise the gas limit in stages right after the upgrade.

The third issue is tightening the criteria for history expiry. Most clients currently store block data since the September 2022 Merge upgrade. If the gas limit rises, the pace of history growth will also accelerate by more than threefold. Developers discussed lowering the rolling history expiry standard to 5 to 6 months.

Submissions of Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) related to “Hegota”, the upgrade after Glamsterdam, have closed. Work has begun to set priorities among about 50 proposals, including 17 newly proposed ones. Only 1 EIP has already been confirmed for inclusion. It is EIP-7805, which forces certain transactions to be included in the next block.

Each client team must prepare its priority list by Sept. 10.

There is sharp disagreement in the community over 2 EIPs. The first is EIP 8363, which dynamically burns Ethereum issuance rewards. The second is EIP 8141, which would let user accounts validate transactions and pay fees using smart contract logic. Many protocol researchers and client teams support EIP 8141. By contrast, layer 2 projects Base and Offchain Labs oppose it. Developers ultimately decided to hold a separate meeting to narrow differences.

A Geth client developer, “Lightclient,” said, “In the end, we have to go in the direction that is best for layer 1. I hope it ends up being a form that gets support from various layer 2s, but someone will inevitably be unhappy. Controversial EIPs are like that.”

Chris of the Base team, which proposed EIP 8130 as an alternative to EIP 8141, sees things differently. He pushed back, saying, “I believe 8130 can achieve the same long-term goals while performing better and avoiding hard-to-reverse compromises.”

Kim stressed, “Ethereum is not a pure technology project. If it were, the opinions of developers closest to the protocol would be the answer. Ethereum’s rules are ultimately determined by social consensus. No single group’s perspective can unilaterally decide what is best. That decision belongs only to the entire community.” She added, “The very fact of a fierce debate over a particular proposal can, separate from technical logic, be grounds for excluding that proposal from an upgrade.”
