Elon Musk’s X is exploring offering creators stablecoin payments, another possible intersection of social media and blockchain-based finance that may emerge while the platform looks to overhaul its monetization program.
CoinDesk reported that X was considering using stablecoins to pay creators and others posting on the platform, including Circle’s USDC▲$0.9999, which is pegged at a 1:1 ratio to the US dollar; however, a final form for the payouts has yet to be determined. The company has not indicated when or to which supported blockchain networks or countries the crypto payouts will be available.
USDC could also allow X to offer a single, dollar-denominated settlement solution across markets, rather than a patchwork of different domestic banking networks, interchanging value on public blockchains. The practical experience would depend on which wallet, networks, conversion infrastructure, and withdrawal policies would be chosen by X.
Besides the other controversies at the time, it was reported that X would replace its Revenue Sharing program with Original Content Rewards on 8 September (the program would last until 7 September). We plan to put a premium on original reporting, analysis, videos, photographs, illustrations, and substantive commentary.
Generally, creators need to have 500 followers and 500,000 impressions from verified accounts on Content in Home Timeline, in the past three months, in addition to being eligible for other X monetization programs. The specified amounts paid to creators are based on impressions of their original posts viewed by Premium users.
It remains unclear whether stablecoin payouts on X will be linked to Original Content Rewards or be a separate service. The details of how custody, wallet verification, transaction fees, currency conversion, mistaken payments, or lost wallet keys will be handled have not yet been confirmed.
Such integration with crypto follows X’s move to become a payments company, launching X Money, a payments app for Premium and Premium+ users in the US in July. The app features integrated money transfers and banking with the social network, and currently relies on customary banking infrastructure, rather than cryptocurrency.
United States regulation is also important. The GENIUS Act, signed into law in July 2025, created a federal regulatory scheme for payment stablecoins with reserve, disclosure, and redemption requirements for approved issuers. The Treasury has since developed guidance that seeks to establish rules for issuing and distributing stablecoins.
Acceptance of USDC by creators would not be considered tax-free. US taxpayers must recognize digital assets received in return for services as income at the fair market value upon receipt and realize gains/losses upon subsequent disposal of the asset.
X would not be the first major social media platform to deploy stablecoin payments to creators, with Meta previously launching USDC payments to select creators in Colombia and the Philippines, supplementing their customary creator payment tools with blockchain settlement.
At this point, X’s plans are still tentative, and the use of USDC or stablecoin payments has not been confirmed. Nevertheless, the discussions show how blockchain payments could be integrated into X, as it is attempting to build out creator payouts and Musk’s vision of a combination social media and financial app.
